Am I nuts?
Thinking of making a trade...the 1M for a Ferrari 456GT.
This car's come back on the market with 28,000km on it now (had 25,000km in Oct 2010). Now with forged 19" wheels plus the oem 17" wheels. It'd be the BMW for the Ferrari + cash difference, which I'd bank for future belt changes and such (every three years!). Otherwise, manual transmission 456s are quite reliable, and relatively simple. Thoughts?

If feeling tantalized by the possibility, have a look at this:
http://www.autoblog.com/2006/12/09/w...-a-late-model/ Bottom-line: if your wallet is fire-proof, you're fine; if not, be prepared for burnt holes.

great on paper, but the side profile on the rear of the car is not as easy on the eye as your average Ferrari, or the 1M for that matter.
In spite of its Bilstein version of EDC, I doubt it handles as great as the 1M, but looking forward to your test drive post to proof me wrong. |

If its one of your dream cars of when you were a kid I say go for it. For me the equivalent would be a F355 Spider, I just love that damn car or a Maranello, of course those cost a bit more though.
Definitely will feel very sloppy compared to your car but when you drive an older Ferrari it just feels so damn special. |

Yea, probably nuts. But if it was a 550 I might almost understand, so if it's your dream car (and you're OK with maintenance) then...

I wasn't ever a fan of the 550/575...too stubby. The 456 has aged much better. Side is much cleaner too, IMO.
Yes, indeed, there's much to lose when comparing to a 1M, but, a) the BMW isn't a V12, b) thankfully the Ferrari isn't a BMW 8-series, c), gated shifter, d) all switches, stalks, etc are per their proper location, not like current Ferraris, and e) the 456 isn't either ugly in comparison to the 612, not the size of a bus like the awfully ugly FF. Sigh. This is it now: http://www.kulumotorcar.com/car-detail.asp?id=1081

Have you driven a 456GT? I've learned to keep my excitement level down till I've actually driven the car. Recently drove a Maserati Cambiocorsa and it was one of the most disappointing cars I've driven. Everyone has a car that is their kryptonite, if that happens to be yours.. DO IT!

No doubt about it... MUST TEST DRIVE. Salesman will think you are nuts. Just show up serious and it shouldn't be a problem. Very pretty car indeed but as said above you may drive it and say DAFUK? I spent a few days driving around a 328 GTS and I remember just feeling "at home". I need more Ferrari in my life.

Having driven a 430, I actually would rather have the 1M. At 6'1 and 170 LBS Im not a large guy by American standards and I could barely fit in the thing. Go drive it first and see if it is really an upgrade. It is actually really hard to beat the unique blend of practicality and flat out hooliganism that our cars provide.

Unlike our wonderful, bastard 1M, the Ferrari is a thoroughbred.
I like the 456 and find it one of the last "handsome" Ferrari GTs. However, as suggested above, maintenance can be extremely costly. A former neighbor had a pretty beat 456 that he got cheap and I loved listening to the exhaust note! Neil |

Yes you are crazy but that car is beautiful no doubt, my father had one 10 years ago, it was the last Modificato version, which IMO makes the front look much better and more modern, you should look for them.
Keep in mind that it isn't as fast as the 1M, it feels like a boat, so don't expect it to corner very well and we had a lot of problems with it, big bills, steering and big engine problems even though my father treated it perfectly. That was the main reason why my father sold it, otherwise he would have kept it. |

Make sure the windows roll up & down all the way before you buy it. After you buy it, don't ever roll them down again. I'm not implying the mechanism might break, I'm saying it will break and it's an expensive repair.
I've always wanted a Ferrari. Sex on wheels and the worlds greatest F1 team. I could buy one right now. I don't know if I ever will buy one. |
