I Saw a 135i Sedona in Downtown Toronto (pics)

Sorry for the bad pics because of my miserly cell phone camera.

But you would not believe my surprise when I was walking into the First Canadian Place parking garage to get to my 335xi that I stumbled on this little beauty. I couldn't believe it. It was warm and had snow/slush dripping off of it. The driver, who was likely someone from BMW Canada Group, had obviously just pulled into the garage from the bad snowstorm we're having. Actually, the snowstorm is exactly why I decided to stay in downtown Toronto and have dinner to wait out the traffic and snow.

My impressions of the appearance of the car. Like many others have stated, the car looks waaaaay better in person than it does in pictures. Pics just don't do it justice. The lines on the car are much more fluid than in pics. Sedona actually looked amazing. Car was outfitted with the Msport package - anthracite headliner, M shifter, Msport wheel, etc.

Anyway, here are the crappy pics:

Nice seeing the 1er next to Sedan for scale. Some of us still haven't seen it in person!

Nice to see a picture of the 135i beside a current model to get a sense of scale. Linus, is that your 335xi beside it. It looks quite large compared to the 3er sedan, it actually looks taller, about the same width, but we know it's a good foot shorter. What are your impressions of the size of the car. I think some of us are concerned that the car is too small, one poster recently called it a clown car.

BTW, why don't these happen in the Oakville/Burlington area. It looks like I'll have to go to the Toronto Auto Show after a 10-year absence. They better let people sit in the 1er!

Actually, the 3er sedan is 178.2 inches long while the 1er is 171.7 inches. The difference is only 6.5 inches.

+10000 First thing I thought of too. Wheels make a huge difference on this car (note to future 128i owners that don't like the standard wheel!)

No, not my wife's 335xi. I think it was a 328 sedan. From the specs that I've seen, the 135i is about 9.5 inches shorter than the 3er. 3er is 181.1" long and 135i is 171.7" according to BMWUSA. Only 1 inch less in width and heigh is identical. I looked into the car for some time to guage the usability of the rear seats. To be honest, I think it looks rather tight compared to the 3 series coupe. Since I will be using my car for commuting (I car pool with 2 people), rear legroom is important. I have two daughters aged 9.5 and 8, so rear legroom is equally important as they're growing quickly. In this regard, the 335i coupe is pretty good. Furthermore, I really do want a bit more oversteer which the 335i offers. Just a personal preference, but I've heard from a lot of 3er coupe owners that it's quite a bit of fun. Obviously in our climate, you have to be prudent for 3 months of the year.

But, in terms of the looks of the car. Because I was coming toward it from behind, I initially overlooked it as another BMW Sedan until I noticed the colour and the 135i stamp. Then, it hit me and I thought HOLY $HIT. The car looked more like a stubby sedan than the sleek, flowing lines of the gorgeous 3 series coupe. But you know what, this isn't a bad thing. It actually works and works really well. Much better in the flesh than in pics. It looks solid and surefooted and a classic BMW from many angles. My favourite perspective is from the front of the vehicle. I know there's been a reference to a "clown car", but that was not my impression. I'd love to own one and would not be embarassed to drive it because of references to its "awkward looks". Bottom line: Great looking but radically different from conventional coupe design. This is why there are many haters.

I have the opportunity to change my car order from the E92 335i to the 135i if I plead with my dealership. Don't think it would be a problem. But I think I'll stick with the 335i coupe. I find it better in the looks department, it's more practical and the slight oversteer vs. the 1er will be more fun for me. Also, a much fatter discount from MSRP than with the 1er.

Perhaps, a 128i cabrio will be my answer next year. Not a commuter car, so not worried about rear space. I already have 2 N54 engines, and I think it would be obscene to have 3 (also more risk than the N52). I'll mod the car to get the thicker wheel and Msport shifter. Test drive is critical.

I ordered a 128i Cabrio 2 days ago, my son is 7, but who cares? This won't be the primary car to shuttle the family around anyway, right?

Regarding the "small feet" comment, hey guys, please don't make fun of our fellow Canadians here, y'all know that it's extremely cold up here, and under that kind of freezing temperature, EVERYTHING shrinks...... HAHAHA

I'll most certainly be driving my 1er through the snow. Going to need some pretty bad ass snow tires though.

128i wheel stink. I'd have to negotiate a swap or a special order.

Kinda liking the wheels on this 135i, though.

Just been back to the dealership and saw a 123d M Sport in Sedona. In the flesh...... I hated it (although that's kind of good, one less colour to worry about!). Much lighter than I expected - made me think of a toy car for some reason. I can see how some people would like it, but not for me!

Pretty much all the pictures I've seen on the internet make it look darker and deeper than it is. I think this one is closest to reality:

I really liked the Sedona. Mind you, this might be the kind of colour that changes according to the ambient lighting. In the poorly lit garage, the colour really came through.

LOL - I meant the colour, not the size / shape. The Le Mans Blue 135i they also had in looked lovely, and has pretty much convinced me to not go AW. Le Mans with lemon leather I think.... (unless news of "Individual" options for the 1 surface of course - Ruby Black paint with Cohiba Brown leather.....mmmmmmmm :biggrin
