I say that only because my indy has a sign saying the same, but I've asked the owner and he has done it several times for me (but says don't mention it if his wife is in the front office).

No sign. I asked, that's how I know.

I've had mine going on four years and that was one of the major expenses that type of car will need, the other is the leaky oil filter housing which uses two gaskets...everything else is maintenance related, brakes, oil, antifreeze, belts, and tires.

My concerns were the cost of the parts and the fact that my car has been well treated and has 38,000 mi on it. Buts as I said above, it's fixed and I'm back in business. I was "lucky" (?) to be able to buy parts on Amazon for a significant savings.

38K is pretty low to have a water pump go out, and I guess the warranty did not cover it? Living in that bone-chilling region does not help either.

Warranty only lasts 4 years after the car is put in service. There's no 1 series that has less than 4 years.

Also, wouldn't the pump fail sooner on a constantly hot climate, as it has to work harder? (It gets pretty hot in the summer, but it's only a few months, not year-round)

Maybe it fails because it gets lazy lol

You mean overtime? Hardly, everything else electrical works fine.

It's not cold now and it had been very hot where OP lives before the pump gave up.

Just wondering why the OP pump only lasted 38k, seems like a lemon amount.

Everything (everything) fails sooner on a car that is driven short distances.

Some people believe lower miles per year are better. But cars in general (especially BMWs) last longer when driven lots, longer drives, track driving etc. See M3 rod bearing failures, which mainly happen on "boutique" cars.

I'm not surprised OP's vehicle fit in that category.

Don't mean to interrupt here but I am driving an 08 135i with 36k miles on the dash. The fan started to be on ALL the time yesterday. Was curious if you guys know any other possibilities it can be other than the water pump or if there is a way I can tell it is the water pump. The BMW dealer here isnt the cheapest the the local BMW "specialization" shop has steered me the wrong way in the past. any information would be greatly appreciated.

You can try to wish it away, or go with the repeated exact same issue it is on almost every other 135 and replace the water pump and thermostat. Information is in this thread.

Good technical post, Mr Gasser. This is good information to have with the video in case you want to swap the parts yourself and need to prime the pump and get the air out of the system.

I'm up near the south side of Nashville. I'd be willing to try to assist you if you want to try to swap out the parts yourself. I've never done this before, but if you feel like you might want to try it sometime, let me know.

SamelCamel,

I am not sure if i can make the drive up there with the way the fan is running out now. Do not want to run the risk of more damage. But I am thinking about taking this job on myself. I have done some things on it and have watched a couple videos which make it seem doable.

Don't forget to try to replace those hoses while you're in there if you can afford it.
