Noop! I was just at my German dealer today... they had a new e88 vert with halogens and THAT car had a LED tube above the headlights. The headlights looked like the same ones we have seen on the 1M test mules photos.

But we are talking about the rear LED lights. The same car I saw today had LED rear lamps. But they were off. I'm going back to the dealer tomorrow. Maybe I can take a pic with the lights on/off and ask about part numbers. ?

Dackel

UPDATE: when I went back to my dealer to take some pics of the new lights I discovered there are in fact TWO versions. Halogen headlight cars get the non LED versions while HID cars get the LED brow and tails. Looks like "b1g1am" was correct! See my photos bellow of the bacl 1er vert.

The new BMW lights look too much like a Lexus LS to me... ESPECIALLY at night.

Are you talking about the tail lights?

Doesn't make sense to me..all tail lights regardless of whether headlights are fitted with xenon or not have been the same

Doesn't make sense to me either, but the BMWNA site makes it seem as if only cars equipped with xenons get LEDs in front as well as rear.

LEDs at that link refer to the headlights...I highly doubt there will be two different version of tail lights

Hi Guys,

Just got back from my German dealer today. There ARE two different version of tail lights AND headlights! lol

I took some pics of a 118i Vert they had in their showroom with Halogens. But for some reason Photobucket website has been down for me. Anyone elese having trouble?

IF the car has halogens the front headlights look like they have that white LED tube(s) but they do not! No LED light for the front headlights. And for the rear tail lamps - you also do NOT get LEDs. Just normal bulbs.

ONLY when you tick the xenon option box do you get that white LED brows and LED rear tail lights. The halogen cars tail lights look very simular to the LED tails - just that they have normal bulbs and not LED tubes.

I asked my parts guys and I have the part numbers for anyone who wants to upgrade their car to the LED look. IF your 1er is built before Sept/'09 you will also need a footwell module AND coding. For cars built after Sep/'09 you only need the new tail lights and one adaptor cable.

2012 M.Y. LED tail lights...

63217273427 left rear LED tail lamp - 116 euros
63217273428 right rear LED tail lamp - 116 euros
61122219698 adaptor cable - 28 euros

61359240534 footwell module 3 - 229 euros (only pre Sept/09 cars need this!)

all prices are WITHOUT the 19% German MwSt tax!

61122219698 adaptor cable - 28 euros

61359240534 footwell module 3 - 229 euros (only pre Sept/09 cars need this!)

Thanks Dackel. I don't think all of the dealers have updated their parts catalog to show these new LED tail lamps.

If anyone wants a current conversion rate:

63217273427 left rear LED tail lamp - $167.38
63217273428 right rear LED tail lamp - $167.38
61122219698 adaptor cable - $40.40

*61359240534 footwell module 3 - $330.42 (only pre Sept/09 cars need this!)

Without module ($375.16)
With module ($705.58)

Of course installation costs + labor is not included

I am assuming the module takes care of the coding issues (pre Sept/09) and the (post Sept/09) are all plug and play? Or will the dealer still have to code all the cars?

poor move by BMW.. Why make two versions..

Anyways, thanks Dackel for the investigation and feedback.

Is there no way you can post the pics somewhere else please.

Also those prices; are they for the bulb only or the whole tail light unit?

Thanks!

I forgot to mention that for the pre Sept/09 cars that need the footwell module... those cars WILL need coding. That is probably an hour's labor at your dealer. Maybe more. ?

Post Sept/09 cars are plug in and play! No coding needed.

I still can not believe BMW's bean counters are using two type of lights that look almost the same. BMW should just give every 1er these cool LED tube lights (front and rear).

Bone-head move on BMW's part - me thinks.

Should I take that as an apology

The new brochure shows and details both types, it says you do get some form of led with the halogens but not the bars.

Halogens > Xeons > LED's

Have you guys seen some of the new Porsche's or Audi's with LED headlights. Damm is that white light! Makes a Xeon look dim and yellow by comparison! LEDs are the future.
