Also as far as crash test rating the civic may have a better rating but i think you both should look at the pictures.

The cabin of the 3 series is barely touched where as the civic has significant intrusion

No need, I own a '04 Evo and have been reading through posts on Evom for years.

But what the hell, I figured I'd do the search anyway and came up with nothing. There was a thread about people who routinely track their cars and some developing cracks but beside that there was nothing. Any other thread had to do with rock chips or flying debris.

Although this won't really answer the question of why the 135i is "heavy", for those who mod, keep this in mind:

Starting at 3400 lbs...

-New wheels can take off maybe 40lbs of rotational mass (rotational is more significant than dead mass)

-Light weight hood / trunk whatever other accessories can take off another 40 lbs.

-For those who are really obsessed with weight and track, AC delete with all associated electronics can save you another 100 lbs.

In total that will give you a 3300lb car with 300hp and 300lb/ft, before engine mods.

Add some sway bars to get rid of the understeer (if you're an experienced driver), a more agressive suspension, an engine tune... congrats, you now have a track monster.

But, for those of us who are only going to drive it on the street, trust me, the weight isn't an issue. At all. Neither is the understeer, in fact, the understeer is a positive for the street. I'm sure most of us will not be able to handle this car at 9/10ths anyway.

Combine the fact that the 135i has a hydraulic steering system as opposed to the electric crap of today... just adds to the greatness of it.

The evo8 and 9 came with lightened windshields
and once replaced with stock lancer windshields the issue was resolved.

No attitude. It's just that I found nothing to back up what you said. I didn't see any threads talking about cold weather causing windshields and windows to crack.

And if it's a real, across the board, problem then why haven't more people mentioned it and why haven't I had a problem?

thanks for coming thou

The Civic is a FF car, so of course it's going to be significatly lighter than a FR car with BMW-level build quality. AWD cars will be heavier still. Everyone is comparing apples to oranges here.

looks likes you need to search a lil more... just look thru this thread...the windshield is mentioned a few times..

http://forums.evolutionm.net/showthr...ndshield+crack

point is the parts used in the 1 are of a diff caliber

the side passenger windows dont hiss and make noises and the hvac unit is not made from plastic....of course the evo will be lighter

lets get back on subject

the 1 is not heavy...is festively plump

1. I'm not reading through some generic 11 page thread to prove your point. That's your job.

2. How is the Evo lighter?
135i is 3200 pounds

Evo X is 3600 pounds

STi is 3400 pounds

And if you were talking about an VIII or IX you would still be wrong.

Evo? Nice spaceship looking wing. Sti? Sounds like you're in a wind tunnel. Both ugly as sin. Who gives a shit about them anyway? Not me.

The 1er isn't heavy....she's just got a nice booty.

Uhhh.. Nope, it's heavy.

But as others have noted, if you want a light car, buy a Lotus. Modern BMW's use power and suspension engineering to mask the weight they carry. They're heavy because they're packed with the features and options that make them safe and desirable to the masses.

I'm resigned to the weight now. That said, I will not opt for power seats and a few other especially heavy options.

Oh, and BTW, I agree that it does have a nice booty.

I, to, am resigned to the weight of the 1er, but speaking of smaller, lighter, smaller, lighter... Any news of the Z1(Z2?) roadster? That could be a Miata killer.

since this topic is only a few months old, I will interject with my disappointment that my 2012 135i convertible is almost 3700lbs curb weight while my daily mk7 GTI with Stage 1+ tune is about 700lbs lighter The 135i is a replacement for my 987 Boxster w/ backseats, but I can definitely feel the heft on her

More like nearly 11 years old.

That said, the BMW convertible is about 250 lbs. heavier than the BMW coupe. And the VW is a hatchback, so you're comparing apples to oranges.

Car can become lighter by removing the heaviest part between the driver's seat and the steering wheel.

Yeah, a little P90X or whatever is probably the best way to save weight.
