Metal thing on pads
Stoptech and OEM pads ship with a metal 'thing' on them which is not present on Project Mu pads- can anyone advise what this is, and the implications of not having it?
Hoping it's just to stop rattle. R. |

Its a metal shim/backing plate. It usually wraps around the OE pads and some aftermarket pads to keep them from knocking around. It also provides a buffer between the pad itself and the pistons. I would think it is something you would want but I'm no brake pad expert. Either those pads don't need them or they figured you would reuse your old ones. Maybe the MFR could tell you.

I was referencing the metal bits that are structurally different, on the Stoptech pad (black), these are marked with a L & R; the P.Mu pads do not have this same piece of metal. |

Extra weight for the pads, reduces the squealing. By making the pad heavier, it changes the frequency the pad will resonate at to a lower frequency, will either eliminate the squealing altogether, or lower the frequency enough that you don't hear it.
Works similar to adding dynomat to the inside of the car to reduce noise. |

Metal thing is actually a noise shim intended To reduce/ eliminate noise.
Cool Carbon uses a stainless steel shim that not only is intended to reduce/ eliminate noise , but also blocks transfer of heat about 3x better than steel only shims
