The speed sneaks up
Quote:
Indeed. Like Thud, I'm not new to the luxury of relatively quick and delightfully over-powered cars: 2002tii, Taurus SHO (a brute if ever there was one), Porsche 996, Audi S4. But I certainly find the 135 the sneakiest of the lot. Item: yesterday, after rounding a country corner in second at about thirty, I gave the car a modest 2/3 throttle up to 6K, shifted in a thoroughly leisurely way, ran to 6K again on moderate throttle, hit fourth, and almost before I could get on the throttle at all noticed the left-hand needle passing 100. In the Porsche, with all that engine noise right behind me, or in the Audi with all the busyness from the complicated AWD lash-up, progress at the same rate to the same speed would have been a lot more dramatic. Is too easy less fun or more?

Less shifting gears is less fun. IMHO
But, I will enjoy the brute power to pass anyone easily on the highway. And also the fun factor of quick acceleration. |

I totally agree with how deceptive the acceleration is. During my test drive last Saturday I glanced at the speedo as it passed 100 and thought, this is pretty quiet for 100kph... then it hit me that I was doing 100 MPH

Yeah, when I test drove a 135i with both a rather large salesman in the passenger seat and my brother in the back seat, I hit 120mph by accident trying to get past a line of about 3 cars on the interstate because this car is so quiet and powerful compared to my Miata. 120mph in the 135i felt like 80mph in my Miata

When I test drove a 135, I part of it was on the interstate. I was all ready to stary complaining about the soccer mom in the darn minivan in front of me going so slow and screwing up my test drive when I looked at the speedo and found we were going over 80 in a 65.

To me, the speedo feels "off". I was averaging 70 mph the other day and cars were zooming past me as if I were going 50 mph it seemed. Even when looking at the painted lane lines on the road they looked as though they were passing by at a sub 70 mph speeds. Maybe it's just me but something seems amiss.

Its funny you posted this today as I was going to post a similar thread. Today I was passing some cars on the highway when I too looked at the speedo as it was quickly approaching 120. I honestly had no idea and proceeded to slow quickly. This car is a beast. For those of you who have tuned already and are dying to increase boost, wow.. I really can't imagine as I'm satisfied with what it does now. There is no need for me to go 120 so fast.

Hmmm, I'll try it with my GPS in the car and compare the speeds.

That's one way to check it. Another is revs, which are probably pretty accurate. R&T says 60 is 2200 with the 6-speed manual. By that test, my speedo is only about 2 mph. fast at 60, not a very significant error in my experience. I'll try the GPS caper and see what comes up.

There is a built in speed warning feature, which chimes you to death, but it works.

GPS check
Checked speedo with GPS. Result substantially as using revs: off just over 2 mph at 60, 3 mph at 70. Indicated 80 is about 76.5.

Didn't think of that.... I think I'll try the "the can't give me a ticket if they can't catch me" method
