When your car finally gets here...What should you do before you sign for it?

Should you drive it first? Obviously check it for defects, cosmetic and such but I would like to drive mine at least around the block to make sure nothing major is wrong with it. Is that asking to much?

no, it's your baby
I doubt anything would be terribly wrong with it, and you can always take it back... this isn't a sleazy used car sales man, it's BMW
my personal approach, I THINK, will be to go through all of it with the dealer, get all the extras and everything done right on it. Then pretend it's normal for me to do this kind of thing, sign the papers, drive away calmly. Then park 2 blocks away, and drool and hyperventilate until I am able to digest the fact that I now own a 135i. Then I will thoroughly enjoy the drive home, and every drive thereafter.

its your car and it does not sound like an unreasonable request to test drive your car before signing the paper work... This is the second largest expense you have after your home, do what you need to be comfortable.

That was really easy to do as I only live two blocks from the dealer.

Seriously, my salesman and I went back to my place to return my daily driver, we then went out for an introduction in all the wonderfullness that is a BMW 135i. My dealer offers terrific customer service.

I take photos of any new car I buy BEFORE I take it off the lot.

I had a cosmetic problem on a car that I had not seen, but it showed up on camera and they had to fix it.

This is a great idea ^^

I always as a rule of thumb check out the car before I drive it off the lot just to prove the existing damage was caused by them and not me. As soon as you take it off the lot, the dealer can claim you were responsibile, I don't care what kind of customer service you have, it doesn't take much for them to get ugly.

Go over every panel, take pics, have the pics date stamped thru the camera and when your satisfied, sign papers.

I've heard from others on this website that you can order the dealer to obtain a copy of the VPC/VDC report to check for any repairs to damage during shiping.

I've heard before that a suprising number of brand new cars will see the body shop for dents or paint repair before the first owner even takes possession, but you rarely catch wind of this. Inspect carefully in daylight before signing papers at the very least.

I just pulled the trigger saturday. Found a AW 135 in Nashville drove down and brought her home! I just didnt have the nerves to order and wait. Turns out I found almost exactly what I would have ordered anyways. Car has three options ...Sport Pkg, heated seats, ipod usb. , Drove the car arround the loop there on I-65 Had the sales guy wash the car (to look it over good) and made the deal. They had 2 manuals. One alpine white the other was Black and had premium pkg. I think a guy was closing the deal on it as I was leaving. Pics are a good idea. :thumbup:Rained all the way home....I had a blast! l Thanks all for the info here...It helped bunches!
