Was at Buttonwillow Raceway Park this past weekend, and had an awesome day. Met fellow 1Addict berns and got to check out his rad 1er. Also joined the sub-2 club, running a 1:59.354.
Since the last event, I added M3 front control arms, and put on some brand new Nexen SUR4 tires. With a fresh alignment, new tires and cool weather, it was the perfect time for a personal best. Session 1: 2:02.4 Session 2: 2:01.3 Session 3: 1:59.9 Session 4: 1:59.3 My goal for this car has always been to go sub-2 on 200 TW street tires with no aero. Glad to have met the goal. That said, still fighting a lot of understeer, even back on the OEM 135i front sway bar. The first session was on the M3 OEM front bar, and the handling balance was awful. Terrible understeer unless I chucked the car into the corners and made it sit on the rear tires in a mild drift. There are many areas of the track where I am faster with no front bar at all, because there is zero understeer. However, there are just as many areas where I lose time because I had constant oversteer/inability to put the power down. No amount of tire pressure changes and shock tuning seemed to affect the handling balance one way or the other. At my next event, I am going to try unhooking both the front and rear sway bars and see if the car feels better. I am reluctant to put an even bigger rear bar on the car, at the expense of the limited traction I have now. The 15mm 335xi bar should be enough rear bar. Just need to sort out the front end. That said, playing with the rebound on the TCK shocks was enlightening, the car felt better, and was faster the quicker the rebound was. Had the front and rear maxed out by the end, and was going faster as a result. However, there are several areas of the track, where, irrespective of shock settings, the car was getting unsettled/bounding really hard/critically under-damped. I may be reaching the effective limits of the TCK shocks. This further proves my theory that "entry-level" pimp shocks aren't worth the cash, and that garbage eBay coils can go just as fast, as long as they are really stiff...

Re: Sway bars... it's a tough little car to get sorted. I looked back at my in-car from my 2:00.3 and the car pushed a bunch, but it was super easy to get on power out of turns with the stock rear bar and LSD. My only change this time was the rear bar, and probably tired tires and a slightly screwed up alignment since I didn't get it realigned after dropping the rear subframe. My understeer was SO improved. Turn-in response and traction was really amazing. Felt like a new car. But rear grip was totally gone. I had to be so delicate with the throttle out of every turn. I'll admit, I didn't play with my damper settings one bit and probably should have. I really want to go to a test day to play around and see what changes do what and feel best. Between this and the traffic in my shitty run group, my chance of running sub-2 was non-existent. What spring rates are you running? Sounds like you could use more spring.

336 lb-in F, 700 lb-in R. Had 400/700 initially, the front end felt way too harsh relative to the rear of the car.

Car: N55 135i MHD Stage 2+ shelf tune
Track: Palmer Motorsports Configuration: CC Lap Time: 1:52.730 Tires: 255/40-17 Hankook Z221 (C31) & 275/40/17 hankook Z214 (C51) Brakes: Stoptech sport front and M3 OE brakes Rear Suspension: 6k/16k OE front sway & E92 M3 rear sway Weather: 58F and overcast/rainy Video: Spent the first ~5-10min just trying to get heat into these hard compound tires (C31 compound is meant for 90f+). They never really picked up more than 2psi pressure or heat across the entire 20min session. Final lap was by far the best grip and it showed on the clock. I am confident I can drop another 3-4s off this time on a sunny 70F day. I also made a ton of changes to the car this past winter and really had to re-learn my driving style. Lots of heavy trail-braking in this video to keep the car stable. Tossing the car too hard into corners seems to be bottoming out the rear suspension and upsetting the car but with the trail-braking it was extremely well planted even with low tire grip. I need to shorten my rear strut length to increase bump travel, but I am not so sure the car will react well to having less droop travel. Teh E92 M3 bar seems to be picking up the inside wheel more than before. Overall, I felt way more in control of the car in that my INPUTS were dictating the cars behavior and balance. In the past, I was kind of just tossing the car into corners and POWERING through them with the throttle (lots of tire wear and slow on the clock). With this setup, I can't really apply throttle until I begin unwinding the wheel (of course maintenance throttle is used). Not too many other videos of 135i's running Palmer it's an amazing track! I've seen the fully fitted SEMA RAZE/Revosport 1M run it in around ~1:48 (I need some 305 wide tires too lol). Here is also a vid of another 135i doing it in 1:52.79. Not sure if either of them are on the forums: Some more awesome video on this track of an M2 and a 1M running it in around ~1:53 (starts around the 15 minute mark): Last edited by bbnks2; 06-07-2018 at 12:49 PM.. |

Old heat cycled RE71Rs (265/275) Stage 2 (350whp) Car's got several seconds (1:52 easy) in it as I only got 3 sessions in before a water pump issue caused limp mode =/ those cement walls are also scary.

Was a really fun session just playing around with the 1M, whose owner I know very well. It's a beautiful, extensively modified and known car amongst the 1M owner scene. Also, it's currently for sale in CT, pm me if you're interested. Palmer is probably my favorite track from the ones I generally run. With it's technical nature, it's perfect for a short wheelbased car, although it doesn't leave much room for error. I was running sub 1:50s the previous day in my M2 when it wasn't drizzling and the sun was out - I think the vid is out there on YT. I used to run ~1:53s on a good day with my stock 135i running on Dunlop Star Specs. Hope to break sub 1:46 when I return this year with some proper track rubber. |
