As the title implies. how would one know if they blew a CP?
CEL? Limp mode? Also, how many people have actually experienced this? I keep reading that it is a known weak point and it will fail even with stock boost levels, but 3+ years of spirited driving and I haven't experienced it. Is the "you should proactively upgrade because it is a known failure point" just vendor hype? I want to hear first-hand experience from people who have had their CP fail. Loss of boost?

Loss of power. Loss of responsiveness. CEL. Limp might be possible.
Keep in mind you can blow your turbos if you keep in the throttle when air is leaking. They'll spin faster due to the lack of restriction of the engine itself, which can cook the bearings.

I blew my charge pipe passing a semi at WOT. Some people's charge pipe just cracks, but mine exploded. Right where it was connected to the throttle body. I heard a loud bang then I heard all the bits hit the under tray. I had no idea what just happened and my heart sunk when I saw all the pieces fall out the from underneath the car in the rear view mirror. I seriously thought I threw a rod, and it instantly felt like the car lost 200hp. Needless to say, I didn't complete the pass and just backed off. It could have been much worse if someone had followed me during the pass. Aside from the massive loss in power, the exhaust note got loud and deep. I was running 17psi when this happened, but I've heard of people cracking their charge pipes at much lower boost levels. In my personal opinion, if your running more than the BMW PPK, you need a aluminum charge pipe.

There is enough evidence floating around the forums to show you that the stock charge pipe is weak, and can fail very easily. If you plan on modding, $200 dollars worth of insurance is nothing.

Well, interesting sidejack on the thread, it's possible to have other things go wrong with boost control and have similar bad effects. Normally, the boost control solenoid/lines setup is designed so in the most common failure mode it defaults to low boost. ex. the boost control solenoid gets stuck in the non-energized position.

I think it also depends on which engine we are talking about. Most of the CP failures seem to be with the N55's. The N54 CP seems to be ok. IF you are running a "piggy tune" that are known for maintaining poor target boost pressures... a CP is a good idea.
I have been running a German flash tune(1bar of boost/14.7 psi) for about 65K kms now. No problems with the stock CP. I have been thinking of upgrading it though.
