Word of advice. Don't go too thick on the rear sway if you aren't going to get an LSD. I put an E92 M3 rsb on my non-sport 128i and there was way too much wheel spin on corners. I had to swap it out with a thinner bar.

The sales person i asked if it were sport suspension, he said yes.... sadly i think he was wrong? Maybe the 128i came with sport shocks, thus being able to call it sport.... just lacking the rear bar?

Unfortunately, not all sales people are good sales people....the sport package contains not only shocks, but springs, swaybars and a few other bits. It's an all or nothing type deal.

Also, if you don't have the sport seats with adjustable side bolsters and leg rest, you don't have the sport version, regardless of what the sales guy said.

Does your car have the sport package/m-sport? If you do, then it already has the rear sway bar (non-sport 128i does not have a rear swaybar).
I would look at other upgrades before adding a rear swaybar, as it's a pain to do and should not be the first/only thing you do, especially if it's just a daily driver. |

I've been thinking about the rear sway bar also.
Where would you rank a rear sway vs say subframe inserts or full subframe bushings (M3 or poly)? Also, how much of a job is the rear sway? Is it easier to do when installing subframe inserts or full bushings?

Beyond that, if you already have the rear swaybar from the stock sport suspension (you state retrofitted, but not sure if you also did the swaybar) then it really depends on your setup and what you're trying to do.. |

I've gathered changing rear sways is a lot of work. Not sure if adding one from scratch is even more effort. And is it worth it? When I installed the sport springs & dampers I purposely left off the slightly stiffer front sway that was in the purchase to maintain some balance since there is no rear anti-sway bar.

Ah ok makes sense.
I would say add one if you do the RSFB (you choose thickness/type), and then you can apply an appropriate one for the front to keep whatever balance you are aiming for. Especially if you are doing RSFB (full not inserts), you are at the point where you could add the rear sway. While you're at it, upgrade the rear brake lines to stainless braided while the subframe is loose/lowered... slippery slope |

I just wish the full rsfb was less expensive or an easier diy or I'd have done it already.

I hear you. I'm nowhere near handy enough to attempt a job like that, so in my mind I was just resigned to paying a shop to do the work so I bit the bullet did all of it in one go (suspension, RSFB 2piece kit, rear brake lines).

Sure - it was 7 hours of labour all told, that covered:
- Install new springs, shocks all around (I had pre-assembled the front struts on my own ahead of time, so that saved maybe 1 hour of labour) - Install Dinan rear shock mounts (part of the above really) - Install 2 piece KDT917 Whiteline RSFB - Install stainless brake lines - Bleed brakes - 4 wheel alignment I feel like I'm missing something here....but that should be it. |

If the car has no rear sway bar, it does not have the sport suspension.
Is it worth adding one? It depends on what your intended usage is, of course - and also, I guess, what diameter bar you intend to add. I forget what the stock sway bar is, but I think it's fairly wimpy - maybe 12mm? But I guess that's better than nothing; I've never driven a 128i with the stock suspension. That said, if you're not going to upgrade the non-sport springs and dampers, I would absolutely leave the sway bars alone. What's the point, really? Sway bars are kind of a finishing touch, and it makes no sense to go to sportier sway bars when the foundation of your suspension is stock. However, if you're going to upgrade the rest, then yes, add the sway bar. As you say, it is a bit of a pain in the ass - the rear subframe needs to be dropped a bit, so make sure you do the RSFBs at the same time (these will have a much more noticeable effect, anyway). I wouldn't go with a larger than stock rear bar unless you're going to do more serious suspension work, as well as an LSD. I've got a 20mm rear H&R bar, but I've also got an LSD and 700# springs in back. They all work together. The car definitely corners flatter, but without the LSD I'd be losing a lot of thrust on sharp turns.

I guess if you're going to upgrade the springs, it might be worth doing the rear sway bar, but I wouldn't go any larger than the one that comes with the OE sport suspension (12mm, I think). Really, though, if you're going to do the rear sway you really ought to be doing the RSFBs at the same time - it's one of the biggest improvements you can make to these cars, no joke.
