Burning/melting From Battery

Hey guys, 2008 328i just had my battery replaced after it had died. Replaced it at a local shop in SF that has a bunch of great reviews.. anyways got the battery replaced tuesday, picked it up Wednesday and today I smelled a strong burning smell from the trunk. As well as my red battery warning light come on, radio cutting on and off and some random warning lights on dash. Car also would struggle to turn on or not turn the engine on at all. Finally looked at the trunk and some smoke came out and saw a very small flame for about a second where the melted portion is in the picture.. so did the tech at the shop mess up this battery or what happened?? They're on the hook for this and whatever it costs to repair right?

Looks like the result of a bad connection

Possibly high resistance connection.

So is this the fault of the technician?

Take it back to them. They should make you whole on that.

Thanks will take it back tomorrow. Should I even drive it? It's about 4 miles from my house to the shop.

Huh. I wonder if not torquing the nut down could cause that? I could see how if the plates weren't in contact it could arc and create a lot of heat.
