Steering lock problem (E90)
The steering lock and padlock symbol (amber and red) has displayed in my car along with an audible clicking from the steering column, and failures to start. New software has failed to cure this. Has anybody else experienced such a problem, if so what was the cure. Since the new software load the dealer says error codes are still found, but no fault is apparent. Any advice would be most appreciated.

Had this happen on my car... Took it into the dealership and they said that when the car was manufactured, there were a set of steering mechanisms thay were prone to this problem... Kept the car for about 2 or 3 days and replaced some of the steering components... Been going strong ever since...

It's a fault with the column and it will most likely happen again, it needs replacing under warranty, I had mine doe earlier this year.

Happened to me for the first time last week. Amber warning light and car wouldn't start with some steering lock malfunction message. Removed and replaced fob and OK then?
Think I parked without straightening the front wheels though - something I wouldn't normally do. If it happens again I'll contact the Dealer |

Thanks guys for your help. The car is at the dealer today. I suspect a new column will be the cure since new software has failed to cure the problem. If so - is it a major dashboard pulled apart job, or is the change less evasive? (I fear the parts never fit back as well as it fitted in the factory). Also will the wheel alignment etc be effected and require resetting in the dealer or will this remain unchanged?
For info - the car has driven and pulled through the gears much better since a new version of software was loaded. |

My dealer estimated 4 hours to do mine, apart from a dirty footprint on the seal and the driver seat being right back,I didn't know they had touched the car. Deffo not the dash out. |

Mine had this, had the car a day to re-code, it went away for few weeks then came back. They changed the whole column.

Same story here, stealer did the software download that don't work, so they
had it back (gave me a 5 series for the day, didn't like it), and the new coloum was fitted by 2pm. Been fine since. Gazza |

I've got this too, dealer updated software and the error message has gone away but the clicking noise came back within days.
They also fixed the noisy rear seatbelt mechanism problem and that has come back too. Looks like it is going back in again (sigh). |

This happens 2-3 times a week for me. I put it down to the fact that the mechanical aspects of the column being released (it does release as I can turn it) are not being picked up properly by the iDrive and I simply pull the fob out and pop it back in.. Cures it everytime.
Most cars I've had have always had a steering lock issue where you have to pull the wheel about a bit and waggle the key to ease the pressure on the lock. I also thought that this could be down to the fact that I turn the car off with slight lock and once off the brakes after slotting P the car moves forward (or back) slightly causing the column to be under a little more pressure. I hadn't considered it a fault or major issue (just an anomaly of the way the cars locks the column)... I may give them a call and see if it can be looked at under warranty (as I fancy the software upgrade too.... ). |

Convenient Access equipped cars' fobs have replaceable batteries..as I think you don't have to have it in the dash to drive.

Mine went in Friday to check out the steering lock problem, all they did was reset the OBC.....so lets see what happens this week
I also had a brake pad warning come up once a few weeks ago although plenty of kms left on all of them so maybe the reset has cured that also.... |

My problem does seem to be somehow key related. When I use the fob that I had when I had the software refreshed the problem virtually never occurs, when I use the other key it happens quite a lot.

Mine had the yellow and the red warnings along with the ratchet-like clicking. I took it in and the SA said it needed attention as soon as possible because it was a safety issue. They replaced a sensor within the steering system. They also updated the software for a separate issue at the same time (well, within the same day at least).

I did a trackday with my ''dodgy'' column LOL
I booked it in the day before to be checked, told them had a long journey the next day so needed to know it was ''safe'' He said he cant garuntee anything, i said, ''YOU cant let me drive my car out of here on that statement mate, If it aint safe, it dont leave your workshop. Its on your head if i have an accident..... cars dont leave workshops if they aint fit to drive'' He made a call to the workshop then told me ''it will be fine'' LOL What a Knobber.

The ratchet sound is what I got on mine, sometimes with the amber light and sometimes not. The E91 has been sold on now so it is BMW's problem - lets just hope the E93 doesn't develop the same fault.
