My MHD stage2+ N55 feels weak
Hi,
I have a FBO MHD stage 2+ N55 135i and did some measurements using the Perfect Power app. A stock run gave me about 302 hp which makes sense. A second run with MHD stage 2+ shows a significant amount of extra power and torque, but it is quite disappointing regarding the figures MHD gives (up to 390hp and 650Nm). Does anybody have an idea of what happens? I can do logs, but have no idea what variables I should record. Thanks in advance you experts! Last edited by NonoxX; 02-11-2019 at 02:19 PM.. |

Look at the torque curves, it's exactly what you should expect. The stock turbo can't keep up with a stock tune at higher revs, so it definitely isn't going to with a tune. All of the increases are in the mid range. Since HP = torque * rpm / 5252, with the torque falling off in the higher revs, so does the HP.

Yep sure, the power has to go down with the revs due to the small turbo. But still, the values I get are closer to what they claim for stage 1+ (350hp / 590 Nm).
I think my app is correctly set up as the curves I get stock are coherent with factory numbers. I may for sure have differences in absolute values, but in terms of relative values, it would give a good idea. One thing I know for sure is that my spark plugs are old. Could it have an influence? I don't feel any misfire and the DME didn't detect any though... Formerly I had a JB4 and I think it felt stronger. I can't do the test anymore as it just fried after less than one year of duty, and I'd prefer staying away from it due to reliability as it's my daily driver. I think a boost leak could possibly lead to such behaviors, but I checked the whole circuit (but just by looking at it), and I don't see any failure point. Last possibility is that their claims are unrealistic in real life... What do you think? |

Hi,
I purchased the Monitor module for MHD and did 2 pulls. https://datazap.me/u/nonoxx/log-1550...og=0&data=3-11 DSC was fully off, and with my winter tires and the moisture on the road I had some amount of skid under 4000 rpm. Anyways these logs show that the DME pulls a significant amount of timing, especially on cylinder 5. I use good quality 98 RON gas and the air temperature today is low (about 2-4 celsius) so I think those two factors can be put aside. For me, this indicates at least I need new spark plugs, worst case even coil packs. |

BTW I replaced spark plugs (97506 stock gap), and I see the same issues, but the engine overall feels smoother, for some reason I can't explain... |

I have the same issue with timing being pulled in cylinder 5 and nothing anyone suggested helped (I have brand new coils and plugs). I'm only stage 1, but the car isn't making the power suggested, for sure. I only put 2 car lengths on my cousins V6 (the 3.7 liter 305hp one) mustang from 60-100mph a few weeks back and I was fbo with stage 1. I should have put bus lengths on him. I'm flashing stage 2+ tomorrow since I got an FMIC, I'll see what's what and log it when I do. My FBO mazdaspeed 3 was easily this fast, and shouldn't have been.
Rob at SPEEDLOGIC is going to review my logs to see what he thinks, only thing I can think is that i need to gap my plugs different, or that my fuel pump is dying and not sending enough fuel to the motor. I'll let you know what he says when he reviews my logs.

Just took a look at your log, timing correction on only 1 cylinder, so it's probably not octane related. Your AFRs are fine but you're way off your boost targets by 2-3 psi and have some throttle closures. All your maintenance up to date?

I'll try to clean it when I find some time.
MHD Stage 2+ (obviously), Wagner Evo2 Competition intercooler, VSRF felineless magic pipe, Aluminium chage pipe, InsidePerformance Duplex catback. |

Good news for today!
I purchased the ethanol map pack and flashed my car with the E30 and filled my tank with E30 blend. The car feels much stronger, and I clocked it at 396 hp DIN corrected under the actual weather conditions, using measured weight of the car... I still don't know why it was so weak on 98RON, and even 102 RON, but I'll try again later. I'm now quite satisfied with those perfs, at least until a bigger turbo comes in the game |

Good to hear. Going stage 2+ seems to have resolved my power issues, I'm spinning through third on run flats now. Need to do some logs, but the car feels very strong, getting squirrely at 60mph is fun.
