*Riss Racing Catch Can Finally Installed*
I've been procrastinating on getting a catch can for a while now.
I was seriously contemplating the fact about whether or not it works or why we even need the thing. I mean, come on. Why would we put this thing in? BMW would have installed one if they felt like we needed one, correct? Well, this is the way that I've been thinking about things lately, the argument about BMW not installing things in the first place depends on some factors. Did BMW plan on this engine being run off of 8 psi or 14? What about free flowing mods like catless DPs and dual cone intakes? Now, I'm talking about all of things that I did to make my engine work harder but there are reports of this with completely stock cars. Here's a great link with a bunch of experiences: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...ighlight=catch I'm running Catless DPs, JB3, AA IC, AFE intake, bla bla. I don’t' run the pis out of my car all the time, but I definitely like to have some fun (you can see that judging by the mods that I have). Along with having the extra power, I need to focus on the reliability of my engine and consider the components that are being affected by the performance mods. So, why the catch can? After about 4 months of owning my car, I noticed that I was a quart of oil low. That's pretty quick. I've noticed that I'm adding oil about every 6k miles. I knew that I wasn't burning this oil. There was no smoke coming from my exhaust and the oil looked fine, so I was thinking, "Where does this oil go?" A while back, I installed the Active Autowerke Intercooler. When I was taking off my OEM IC, I noticed that there was a bit of oil in the bottom of my IC. I figured that it was somewhat normal, but after reading about how much oil is being blown into our intake manifolds and air management tubing, it's made me really think about how gunked up my system could possibly get. I've seen it in a couple places. The IC was one place and I also saw the oil around the OEM DVs when I added the Forge valves. Now, I've had the AA IC on for a while now and I'm seriously considering popping off the air tubes so I can clean the inside of the IC. I've had the AA IC longer than I had the OEM IC, so I can just imagine all of the oil in there. I've talked to other people about their experiences, and some were pretty severe. Harold from HP Autowerkes tracks his car quite a bit. He was telling me how he would get black flagged in the practice runs because his car was blowing smoke. This was happening since there was so much oil in his intake system that it was making its way into the engine, combusting, and blowing smoke. He was explaining that about a month after he installed the catch can, the smoke went away and never came back. The catch can was doing its job by effectively catching all of the oil that was clogging his system. Maybe Harold can chime in here and explain his story a bit better since this is what I got from him telling the story. To sum up, I'm happy that I've done what is necessary to keep my system free from sludge. I think about the reasons to get this: -It's Inexpensive ($75) -Extremely easy to install (It took me about 30 minutes total) -Helps keep the passages clean from oil and sludge I really appreciate that Riss Racing was able to provide such a great product for such a great price.

Looks good. I was about to sell mine but when I took it off and drained out the oil I realized I should keep it. I have had it on for about 2 months and there was a decent amount of oil in it. I am not sure how bad it is for the motor to have oil in the intake track but I would imagine the less the better.

congrats on the new mod. I've had mine for quite some time and never got to install it. I was planning to have it installed today actually. But I have to agree about needing to add a quart of oil after about 6000miles. I really believe that this is an essential mod!

No, but I added the Forge DVs with the yellow springs. I changed them out to the green springs a week later, and I already saw build up on the Forge valves.

The blue tint just went away. I hope the oil is still there.
