Helloooo DenCO

I moved to the area late spring....picked up my E90 this summer and found this forum recently. Now bring on the snow!...in the high country.

Welcome to Denver 123. Sounds like you'll get your wish for snow tonight!

I'm installing my snow tires/rims this weekend - I was trying to hold off as long as possible.

Seems a bit early...since it only takes about 30-45 min to throw the set on, I usually wait until I HAVE to. Just watch the weather. Of course these days, I drive my jeep if it snows - oh wait, the top's not back on yet - holding off as long as possible on that one too!

Yeah, but if he has the sport pkg. tires on, even when it starts getting colder he will notice less traction...even without snow. The stock sport tires don't work so well in the cold, and especially the snow.

Edit: Oh and welcome!

I only have the summer Bridgestone 18 inch RFTs on my E90. I haven't purchased a winter setup yet as our other vehicle is a SUV. We have a road trip to Sante Fe, NM planned in mid November.

I really want to take the BMW on the road trip, but I'm a little worried if I get caught in snow. Do you think I should risk it? I don't know how long the folks in Denver go before putting on winter tires.

Raton pass at the CO/NM border can get real sketchy real quick during the winter. If it were me I honestly wouldn't risk it on that drive and especially in your nice Bimmer. Get some snows on there and you should have no problem.

I thought about waiting a bit longer but I don't trust the weather guessers - I have experienced too many snowy/bitter cold Halloween's to risk it. Plus, my 335 is my only vehicle. It was actually nice to swap out my tires on a nice warm day -- those lug nuts get mighty cold!

p.s. I've thought about buying an old 4 wheel drive but it's not in the budget at the moment.

Thanks for the advice. I hadn't looked up the route to Sante Fe yet. I just assumed since it was basically a straight shot down I25, it wouldn't be that difficult. Considering the wife and 7 month old daughter will be riding along, I'll probably just take the SUV. I just put on new tires on the SUV too. Damn, i was really looking foward to a road trip in the Bimmer.

DenverJayhawk - this is creepy - I feel like we were brothers separated at birth I also have a 2006 330i (Jet Black). My wife and I (and our 6 month old baby boy) are going to New Mexico next month (partially for work, partially for play). I want to take the BMW, but snow this time of year makes me nervous, so we'll probably take our SUV. Even creepier, I grew up in Lawrence, but actually went to KSU (still love the Jayhawks, but I have to root for KSU when they play now ).

So here is the million dollar question - what is your SUV? We have a LR3 - that will just be creepy beyond belief if you guys have a LR3 too

Rich,

That's pretty funny. No, we don't have an LR3. It's an Isuzu Rodeo. But my 330i is Black Saphire

When did you live in Lawrence? I went to KU in the mid 90's. Went to high school in Wichita, KS and my folks actually lived in Lawrence for little while after I graduated.

So, to the question at hand...are you taking the SUV to Sante Fe and when will you be there? If you take the Bimmer, maybe I will too. I really need to purchase a winter setup.

where in Denver do you live? I usually notice most E90's that I see on the road. I've seen a few 330XIs and a couple 335s, but very few with sport package.

I'm just east of downtown, south of Park Hill in a neighborhood called Mayfair.

I graduated from Lawrence High in 1996 - last class before they split in to two high schools. We lived near 15th and Kasold - my parents still live in Lawrence, but they recently moved outside of town (off highway 40 on your way to Stull) - Lawrence is getting pretty big and they prefer the quietness of the country. I miss Lawrence, it was a great place to grow up, but I have to admit, I love Colorado. Whenever we go back in the middle of summer I remember why I don't live there anymore

Not 100% sure on when we'll be heading down to NM - still trying to nail down some meetings. And I doubt that we'll take the Bimmer - Southern Colorado can get rocked with snow on a moments notice, and the LR3 is pretty much unstoppable.

BTW, I think we are both looking for a set of winter tires/wheels (with similar needs - both SP, 330s) - we'll have to keep an eye out so we don't bid against each other

Take care,
Rich

I'm assuming this question is to me We are actually down in the Springs.

And I'm shocked at the number of E90s out there - however, most seem to be 325 and 328 (i's and xi's), and you are 100% right, very few with sport packages. I would have loved to have splurged on the 335, but with a new baby, the 330i is just about perfect, and they are basically giving cars away right now (especially RWD ones going in to winter!).

+1, with snows and watching the weather you can do it no sweat. I go to Santa Fe 5-6x a year and have taken my 330i and 335i most of the time. Hit snow 2x in each of the last two winters. Cars handled it fine. If a major storm is forecast take the SUV, though I have only taken our pathfinder once due to threat of snow.

The bmws are simply great on that trip - fast cruising, good mileage and the twisty's over Raton and the drop into SF are a blast!

Be sure to take a radar detector-you'll need it.

One other quick comment - not sure if you have a place to stay in Santa Fe yet, but if you are still looking for somewhere, we've stayed at the Casa de la Cuma before (http://www.casacuma.com/). It is a small bed and breakfast within walking distance of downtown. Fantastic breakfasts, nice rooms, small and cozy. We will likely be staying there if they have openings when we head down.
