New Alternator clicking noise

So I ordered an alternator from reputable online parts source. My mechanic opened box and pulled up and down in/out on spindle. It made a popping or clicking noise as he pulled/pushed.
He claims it's no good. He has a fast and same price solution. But is this a thing or is he being overly cautious...??

Is it a remanufactured alternator or actual new one? I have a brand new one here (not reman) waiting to go in my 325 and there is absolutely no play on the pulley. No type of clicking noise either.

That alternator is no good. Sounds like a bum reman? The only motion of the pulley should be rotational only.

I replaced my Bosch 180 amp's voltage regulator assembly preventatively per VehicularDIY's video. When I need to replace the alternator I would use a new one, most likely a Bosch. This is for electronics compatibility, even though I do not like Bosch. However, TYC 180 amp at $210 on Rock Auto looks like a very good deal. Since my TYC starter is working great (replaced the known slow crank Bosch junk), I might try their alternator.

I went with a new 180 amp Valeo unit. No problems for me so far.

OP here.... Very helpful thanks guys.

I was able to get online seller to agree to a return and a return label

Sadly on my 330i the alternator is wedged against the intake so no way to just replace regulator... very easily. So paying once and having mechanic replacing both
