2008 328xi valve cover
Hi
Anyone know if this piece of valve cover serves any purpose to engine function. It broke when I removed it to replace the valve cover gasket. Note the hole next to my finger is blocked which makes me think it is for alignment purposes possibly. Thanks for the help |

I believe that is one of the two crankcase cyclonic valves, basically an oil separator for the PCV system. You can probably glue or RTV it on if you are sure the it will not let go and drop into the cylinder head later. But I would want that thing in place myself.
Given the amount of time it takes to remove the problematic plastic valve cover, I would just put in a new (aftermarket) one. An old valve cover is known to crack and leak. CT is a CARB state, therefore the valve cover and gasket should be under the 15-year/150K-mile SULEV/PZEV warranty. |

Thanks. I was hoping I could get by without it. I would be afraid to use rtv in that environment. You are correct it’s a massive pain of a job but the car is at 168k on miles so out of warranty
