can you switch your plates when switching the registration?
Hi Guys,
I live in AB and was wondering if I can pick another plate number when I switch them to my 135i from my old car. I am thinking not of getting a custom one, but browsing through the inventory to see if I find something interesting... hoping for ###-135 hahaha ooo BMW-135

You can transfer your old plate, or you can get a new one. If you use the old one, as long as it is still valid you just pay a transfer fee($25 I think). If you get a new one you just pay the yearly registration fee. There is no charge for a new plate on a new registration. I have a couple of extra plates, but I searched through the plates at the registry and got a XXX-128 plate

So in AB , you can search the plates at the registry? I am in Toronto, don't know if we can do that, I just told my SA to get the number I want.

I think they may be able to let you choose a number in their system... but not one that is like customized like my current plate haha.. I will be transfering mine over.. since I paid for it a year ago..

I lived in T.O. for 10 years before moving out to alberta. One thing I don't miss about Ontario is waiting in line at the MTO office trying to do anything with my licence or registration.
Alberta does things a little different. Our registries are small privately run offices that handle most provincal licences and permits. They are all over the place, and you rarely have to wait in line. And if there is a line, just go down the road to the next one. Oh, and many are open evenings and weekends. as koala said, it is pretty informal here, just ask the agent nicely and they usually will let you look through and select your own plate. Also, they usually get batches of sequential plates, so if you want, you can get sequential plates for all of your vehicles.

I nearly forgot about the liquor store/beer store thing. I still laugh when I think back to the friday night beer store line ups in down town T.O. when I was going to school:biggrin:

I can't even imagine what that must have been like. We did have government run liquor stores here too, but they were deregulated before I became legal age
