'07 335i vs. '06 M5

I currently have a 2007 BMW 335i that I really like. I have a buddy that has an 2006 M5 that he is wanting to sell. My 335i has 45K miles on it and the M5 has about 58K on the clock.

He told me he would sell it to me for $32,000. Should I dump the 335i and get the M5? or stick with the more "practical," more fuel efficient 335i.

Just wanted to get all your thoughts. I hope all is well.

Get the M5. I drive my friend's 09 M5 from time to time and I love the car. This is the car that made me decide to get a M3 as my next car. I know a M3 is not a M5 but I cannot justify spending over $100k on a new car.

My problem is my brain goes into the whole financial picture of the M5. For example, cost of repairs, gas mileage, insurance... all of that crap.

I'm a number nerd, so suff like this always figures into my decisions.

That being said... the M5 is awesome!

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have an M5, but if it breaks, you are gonna pay and it won't be cheap, I will probably never own a BMW out of warranty for that fact alone let alone an M car. But an M5 sure would be fun!

Dump the 335i and go for the M5. This may be E90post but I still think 90% of posters here will recommend the M5. That being said, not sure how much it would cost to upkeep the car.... But dude... you're pretty much trading in your 335i for a M5 at a slight increase in cost out of pocket. It may be a tough decision for you right now, but I just see a reason to get in an M5.

Get the m5. You should check with your friend and make sure the car hasn't had any issues (specially since after the warranty period ended). This should give you some piece of mind. It might also be worthwhile checking on the m5 forums to see what are the common issues with an 06 m5.

Lastly, you can look into getting a warranty (not sure if this is possible or not). Good luck with your decision. Post pictures if you decide to go the m5 route.

I wouldn't take it.

1. The e60 chassis will be replaced very soon (months ?). You will end up owning an "old" model, the resale value will plummet. On the other hand, the 335i will still be actual for 3 years (albeit a small facelift on the e92).

2. The world + dog is moving into forced induction. Your M5 is already old technology. The next M5 will probably leave the old one in the dust.

3. The owning cost of the M5 is very high and is not justified due to 1) and 2).

IF you can get your hands on a good extended warranty I'd take it.

IF you can't, I would probably steer clear - that is an amazing engine, but it's even more amazingly expensive if you have to replace it.

As far as depreciation goes - it's an M - such that depreciation is offset by the fact that it's an M (look at E46 M3 prices - they're holding quite well considering they're now "old tech" and "previous chassis").

To be honest, mechanicals would be the least of your worries - I'd be more conncerned with the electricals going before the engine.

Look into a good extended warranty and then if you get it - don't look back!!

You say OLD I say Classic.

Faster Yes but in the dust I don't think so. + V10 NA will be a classic for years to come.

All cars are expensive to maintain...get extendend warrenty (supplimental?).

M5 All the way. You could get a used one with way less miles for a little more.

I have also spoke the dealership about extending my warranty on my 335i. They are asking for about $3,400 to extend the warranty to 6 yr/100,000 mi.

I am trying to decide if that is worth it, but I also want to get GIAC or Procede. I want the best of both worlds.

I may just wait until my bro-in-law gets done with his C63 AMG.

Forget the C63, Go with the BMer
Life is short (may be shortened by the M5?)
I have owned a way earlier M5 and nothing compares yet.....

...however it will be a very cruel mistress....

you've been warned...my friends and I have endless conversations (drives WAGs nuts) on this topic...the truth is until you can walk in the front door of the dealer and buy a new one outright with out looking at the sticker youre not in the market for a true M car or RS, Ferrari etc etc

cheers

Garage List
$3400 seems high for the extended warranty.
