Thumbs up My Accident: In praise of honest people

I just spoke with the insurance investigator from the other party's insurance co. and found out that he told the investigator that "he thought he could make it" when he made the left turn from opposing traffic in front of me.

It was obvious from the accident that that was exactly what he did but, still, I was happy that he admitted it.

An article about my accident (incl. photos) is here.

I spent ten years of my professional life as an adjuster and claims manager for very large auto insurer. My personal experience is that people will tend to minimize/maximize their actions in a subconscious way and certainly rationalize, but rarely will they actually be dishonest or disingenuous for the purpose of shifting blame. The former is a natural reaction to any traumatic event, the latter is obviously dishonest.

Under the circumstances of your accident as you described, the vehicle that turned in front of you is always wrong. You had the right of way, he doesn't. Even if you had run an amber light, he would still be in the wrong.

Thanks. I know I had the right of way but I felt better about the whole thing when the ins. investigator told me what he said.
