Advice on how to get a good start in an auto.
I gotta steptronic with paddles and I could use some advice on how to peel out better. My friend has a 2001 M3 manual. Whenever we do rolling starts from 20 or 50 I always win. However, due to the advantage from a clutch, when we start from a stop he always gets a big head start because I virtually start from zero rpm. This is also the same reason I can't seem to do burnouts. I know there has to be a loophole here because I've heard automatic 335i's post even faster 0-60 times than the 6 speeds. Any suggestions or tips on how to attain better starts will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks. PS - this is all done on his PRIVATE street. |

Left foot on the brake, right foot on the gas. With the brake pressed, rev up the engine a little. When you want to go, release the brake and punch the gas. Using this technique you don't waste time moving your foot from brake to gas.
Although break torquing the engine isn't very good for the transmission. You don't have to rev the engine up though, you can just do the same procedure with the engine at idle...

DTC, DS mode, and brake torque. Though as the poster above said, brake torquing is really hard on the transmission.

I always assumed you would do better with DSC on (normal mode), because the 'friction coefficient' between the rubber and the road is higher/better when the tires are not slipping. Just like how you stop faster with ABS, instead of letting the wheels skid.
I would really like to see a DTC vs NO DTC race on a strip. |

Do not do a neautral drop!!..anyone who knows anything about cars knows that this is deadly for the tranny...torque brake it to the desired rpm...2500 or so and when its go time hit the gas, but be careful as too much throttle may cause the tires to spin...and even though you may think it looks cool, if the tires are spinning your not getting traction...you want the tires as close to that breaking point as possible without them breaking loose...hope that helps oh and take the traction control off

I still would really like to see some drag strip numbers on this though... I'm going to start a new thread to poll the peanut gallery, to see if anyone has actually tried it. |

If you require max acceleration from a stop, engage DTC mode, command 1st gear with the paddle shifters, rev to 3000 rpm with your foot on the brake, release the brakes and then mat the throttle.
Once you're off, slap the shifter into DS mode before 1st hits redline and hang on.

I remember a buddy of mine who did that with his new 1986 Chevy IROC-Z. He had to replace the tranny. Then, a couple of months later it got totalled in a wreck. He wasn't driving it when it got in the wreck, but he had an internal injury in his abdomen that my pops had to perform an operation. Saved his life.

With it off, you would at least be able to keep the engine rev's where you want them to be to hopefully get the power to the pavement. |

I don't think our cars allow us to rev it up in neutral and then drop it in D. The car senses the high RPMs and waits for them to drop before engaging the transmission. OP, besides brake torquing, you're SOL. An aggressive tune will help though.

Check to make sure you have decent grip tires so you won''t lose the grip and let 'er rip.
