Universal Garage Door Mirror

I didn’t want the Premium Package (I’m just not a fan of leather, let alone really expensive leather). However, it would be nice to have the rear-view mirror of the Premium Package for its universal garage door opener function.

Does anyone know if it is possible to order and install that rear-view mirror from a dealership?

it probably going to cost you more than it was in the package, call up your dealer or tischer to price it up

Unlike some other options (ie comfort access or sports package/seats), I believe the universal garage autodimming mirror can be retrofitted within a resonable price, call your dealer.

Yes it can be retrofitted. There a DIY on the forum. I picked up my mirror off ebay. Don't remember what I payed, but it wasn't too bad. Then ordered the harness from Tischer. Took maybe an hour to install. It was pretty straight foward.

Oh, I should have mentioned this was for a 2011 335i E90 Sedan.

Well, I’m not sure how much the mirror individually costs as part of the package. I have no doubt that the package provides a bulk savings, but I didn’t want the other features of the package.

Like I said, I didn’t want leather – especially for the $1900 it would have cost!

I’m really not looking to do this myself and I’d rather not have to fuss with eBay. Thanks for your response, though.

That’s what I hoped. It doesn’t seem to integrate into the car as a whole too much so I assumed it should be a (relatively) easy swap with an upgrade cost. My dealer is sort of lazy, though, and I was hoping to avoid him for just a pricing question if anyone here knew the answer.

Figure about 3 hours labor from the dealer. Depending on labor in your area that alone could be ~$500 plus the cost of parts (IIRC another $500)

There is no garage door opener on the planet that is worth $1,000. I'll call my CA to see what he estimates it for, but I'm not paying a grand just to avoid having my own garage door opener clipped to the sun visor!

I installed it myself for less than $200. But if you don't want to fuss with ebay, you might just have to call your dealer and pay full price.

I agree - Check the DIY section, I remember a post where someone installed a small switch in the ashtray that ended up linking to a garage door opener in the console. It was a very clean install... Let me see if I can dig up that thread.

Good option for you.

Meh - I have an old homelink module from an Audi that someone can have for the cost of shipping. Power and ground and you're done.

Same here, bought a mirror in the FS section here on e90post for roughly 150 or so. Just needed a retrofit harness (also bought here) for 20 bucks, took me about an hour to wire everything up and bam, auto dimming and ugdo.

I don't know why you are against a DIY project for this because this will save you lots of time and money, but it's your call. Looking on realoem replacement mirrors cost at least 350 and the dealer will charge you an arm and a leg to install it. Around my area the labor rate is about 125 an hour so assuming they will charge at least an hour you're looking at about 500 at the very least for your total charges.

If you're not a DIY guy and wants stealer to do the retrofit for you, it's gonna cost you close to a grand (parts will be $500+ and labor $120 * 3hrs). You'll find ordering ZPP is worth the hassle, even though you do not want leather.

The dealer will bill in the vicinity of 3 hours for this retrofit - even if a DYI'er can do it in an hour.

Dealers generally take retrofit customers to the cleaners because they can. The project isn't on their schedule of fees so they can add in all of the coffee breaks and lunches to boot - somebody has to pay for that and it might as well be the retrofitter.

Dealer Cost for Mirror Upgrade

Checked out my local (Jax, FL) dealer for labor only cost for a mirror upgrade from the very basic (no auto-dim, no homelink, no compass) mirror. Estimate was 2.4 hours at $90 an hour - some extra time was for running a wire down the A-pillar - NOT needed for US spec 3 series - don't think local dealer had ever done this procedure.

Got an upgraded mirror from eBay $200 and wiring retrofit from Tischer about $30. Essentially adding four wires to an existing harness - then plug and play.

Check a few DIY's before springing for dealer parts and labor.

Garage door opener in mirror, why?

Here's what I did. Cost about $40 but that included the price of a new garage door opener.

[IMG][/IMG]

Its the black button to the left of the on/off switch (in case it wasn't blatantly obvious).
Pretty easy DIY. Been to the dealer plenty of times with NO questions either.

-Cheers

I've done it as well. Couldn't find a mirror on ebay at the time so the OEM was about $400 from tischer, including wiring kit.

I was also able to get a mirror WITHOUT a compass (I have nav so I didn't want that stupid letter in my rearview) which was nice. And this way I have three garage buttons instead of one with a DIY-type solution.

I hope you're getting a sunroof. Otherwise, you're gonna have a hard time having power to feed your mirrors.

The wire harness kit runs down to the fuse panel. Don't need a SR for that.

I have a Homelink, Auto-dim Mirrior for Sale. $75.00 + shipping. Can't beat this deal anywhere! PM me!

It is a more difficult and a costly install in the newer cars. just as they removed the prewiring for the alarm, they did the same for the rearview mirrors.
