Question 128i peeps w/Performance SSK...

Can someone with a 128i please post their shifter's throw distance?

N54 = 80mm throws
N54 w/Perf SSK = 55mm throws
N55 = 70mm throws

I would like to know how long are the throws on a 128i stock and for a 128i with the Performance Shifter.

Thanks,
Dackel

What good alternatives are out there for those who didn't get the factory SSK when it was available?

The 128i Performance SSK is still available(I think). The 135i Performance SSK is not.

I think you drive a 135i right? I would call around to various dealers. I am sure their must be a dealer with some old stock somewhere. Perhaps one dealer can check where the part is at another bmw dealership for you.

I just did a quick check on leebmann24.de and while the SSk kit is not available... they DO still sell the Perf shift lever for a N54 135i...

#5 bmw p/n 25110434217

http://www.leebmann24.de/catalogsear...%0925110434217

and the carrier #7 bmw p/n 25110434218

http://www.leebmann24.de/catalogsear...?q=25110434218

The only other parts you would need are:

(1) bmw p/n 25111220600
(2) bmw p/n 25117571899

135 Performance Short Shifter
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=25_0480

I think another option would be to order the Performance shift lever for a 128i and try it in your 135i. Perhaps it would give you 90% of the feel of the 135i Perf SSK. ?

128i Perf shift lever p/n 25117542200

Or try a shifter from a Z3 3.0 or an e60 550i - both of those cars also have a great SSK. I did run a Z3M shifter in my old e36... but it was way too short and very high on shift effort. So I would stay away from that one. Some people here like their B&M ssk.

Here are some good pictures of the above shifters...

Enjoying this thread immensely; my 128 is away in winter storage so unfortunately cannot add any info. I do have a BMW SSK (used) which I hope to install this spring. Can check back then.

I couldn't find the BMWP SSK so I did the UUC Evo 3+DSSR. I very much like the shorter shifts. The shift effort is a little higher but the shifts are very crisp without the slight vagueness of the stock shifter. There is no in gear slop at all it feels very tight and precise, when people say bolt action this is what they mean. I measured the shifts at the standard height of the lever to be about 2 inches(3rd to 4th) using the method described earlier in the thread. It will obviously get shorter the lower you adjust the shaft but it is perfect for me as is.

When buying the DSSR I was a bit confused by their website saying post 1/2009 builds used a different DSSR. I bought the 86mm one as that is the one the site I bought from recommended. Luckily I think it is the right one because I didn't have any problems and it was about the same size as the original.

The install wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. I did it on jack stands in my garage in a couple of hours. The directions from UUC were clear and easy to follow. The only frustrating part was putting the screws in. I wound up wrapping them in painters tape to extend them flexibly and then it took me maybe a minute or two each.

Overall I would say its a good kit. I picked up the kit on sale and I would say it was well worth the price. I would definitely recommend this kit to anyone wanting the BMW Performance shifter but can't find it. I have had this car going on 6 years now and I whish I did this earlier.

BMW no longer makes the Performance SSK - that is why you couldn't find it.

Btw... what is that 2nd to last pic with the tape over the part/bolt? I hope you also have done the CDV delete mod. That is also a MUST HAVE mod on our cars.

2nd to last pic is the tape on bolt it allows you to hand thread the screw without dropping it. Once its threaded in you just pull and the tape comes right off. CDV has been done for a while.

Can you install the UUC bushing holder without pulling the carrier usin your tape method????

That would make my install WAY easier.

It can be done without dropping heat shield and transmission.

Bend the heat shield so you have access to the lower clip on the shifter.

Even with my big hands I got it done.

Cut the hex down to 1/4" on short end and you can tighten the tiny screws.

The M Performance SSK is still the BEST money I've spent on my 135i. I think the SSK, then the CDV delete and then the Performance Exhaust are what makes my 135i "special" to me when I drive it. Ohh and my flash tune pumping out 380hp and 520Nm.

Anyone have any updated definitive way to go when it comes to SSK? The mixed reviews and tedious install of the UUC make me hesitant. The OEM BMW Performance SSK no longer available.

It seems like pocketing the money and sticking with my current setup of ZHP weight knob + CDV delete + BMS clutch stop may be the best available option at this point.

I've had the UUC for a couple of months now and have no complaints whatsoever. I find it smooth and natural feeling. The install is easier than the BMWP kit because you don't have to remove the carrier. I have an N54 so my throws were pretty long there was a very noticeable change in shift throw but not really much in added effort. Note I also did the DSSR so I don't know how it feels without it.

What car do you have?

The cheapest way is just to replace the shift lever(#6) and plastic socket bearing(#7)... Personally I would go with the 128i Perf Short Shifter(since BMW still sells it) or go with an e60 550i shift lever... but with the e60(and other models) you might have to bend the shift lever for proper palm/hand alignment in your car. I have the e60 550i shift lever in my e39 540i and just LOVE it. I like it even more than my Perf SSK for my 135i. I had a Z3M SHIFT lever in my old e36 323i... while it did the job... it felt like you were about to break something on each and every shift. But the shifter throws were very short. I would say go with the 128i Perf short shifter or the e60 550i - and make it work.

The LONGER the end of the shifter rod is... the shorter the throws. You can see that the X3M has the longer end link... hence the very short throws.

See IF you can find a BMW Perf Short Shift lever... just the lever/arm...

BMW p/n 25110434217

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=03_2823

But I think its been discontinued. A Perf SS lever for a 128i would get you pretty close - I think. But like I said I really LOVE my e60 550i SSK. All you would need to do is stick the level in a shop vise and bend it a little bit to resemble your stock shifter. I would also buy some extra c-clips(#6 in the above RealOEM link) bc you will loose one when you do the install.

Good Luck,
Dackel
