Speedometer a little fast?

When I drive my 335 I cant believe the handling of the car. I go 50mph and it feels like 25mph. Anyway I was driving one day next to a car that had a numerical speedometer. I thought i was going 40 and his read 36. I might be off but I remember a speed trap were it shows how fast your driving and it seems off by about 4 or 5mph. Anyone have this problem?

Do we need to have one of these threads every single day?

Optimistic Speedos

I've heard that BMW purposely calibrates their speedos to account for the largest wheel/tire combo possible. On my E36 i went with 235/45 tires instead of the 235/40's that came from the factory to better compensate for this. On the E90 I decided to mount 255/40's on the rear to replace the 255/35's. I hope this helps answer your question.

its not a specific speed, it's a percentage. At 100MPH speedo is about 5MPH off, at 80MPH its 4MPH off, etc etc.

That is correct, and it has been this way for years. I have had 5 bmws and for sure my 89 had the fast speedo.

I've been watching that new series on the SPEED channel "Battle of the SuperCars" and the speedo's on most of the cars they test are always faster than what the VBOX calculates.. so I believe this to be true for most car's especially if you've changed your wheel/tire setup

It's approximately 5%, but not on all cars. 82MPH on my speedo = 80MPH in actuality.

This just means that BMW is eventually going to get sued for odometer fraud. Just like Subaru and Honda before them. Both Honda and Subaru had to settle class action law suits and extend warranties due to speedometers reading off a few percentage points. You would think that after two other manufacturers got sued class action that they would have learned...

Wrong. the speedometer might be off, but the odometer is spot-on. I invite you to route a trip via your GPS then reset one of your trip meters. The resulting distance will be identical. This has been covered here numerous times already.

I just wish Shiv could perhaps work a little magic and fix this for us. It's gotta be possible if he can hijack all the gauges to do various things!
