![]() Deutsches Museum Flugwerft Schleißheim Effnerstraße 18 85764 Oberschleißheim Germany Tel. +49 (0)89 / 31 57 14 - 0 Fax +49 (0)89 / 31 57 14 – 50 E-mail: fwsdeutsches-museum.de http://www.deutsches-museum.de/index.php?id=flugwerft&L=1 The Museum is open daily from 9:00 to 17:00. Closed on German Holidays – check their website for more info. Flugwerft Schleißheim is literally a twenty minute drive from BMW’s Welt and Museum. It is a really cool aviation museum – perfect to see while on ED (European Delivery). But it is not so big like some museums in the USA (like the Smithsonian in DC). Schleißheim (Schleissheim) is still a worth while side trip – to anyone who is in the Munich area. IF you drive up the B13 bundesstrasse it is pretty much a straight drive up to the Oberschleißheim and the museum grounds. Flugwerft Schleißheim is located in a residential area and there is also a Schloß (Residence) next door to the museum. You would never know the museum was there though. Just a few small signs pointing the way. Even once you pull into the grounds… it is more of a forest or park than an aircraft museum. At least not until you get into the museum! Flugwerft Schleißheim is part of the Deutsches Museums. The Deutsches Museum also has a Verkehrszentrum (traffic car museum) and a Technik Museum in Munich.IF you go to either of those museums – it would be wise to just take the U-bahn bc parking in downtown Munich can be a pain. Both museums are quite close to the center of downtown Munich. IF you only had time to go see one of these fabulous museums – I would say go see the Verkehrszentrum Museum. Onto my photos… Enjoy, Dackel First some photos from the internet – showing the outside of the museum. ![]() Flugwerk then and now… ![]() ![]() ![]() Maps… ![]() ![]() Museum catalog that can be purchased at the museum gift shop. ![]() And onto MY photos now… ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Porsche-Mooney aircraft… 911 power’d ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Zeppelin engines… ![]() ![]() ![]() A cool model bi-plane… ![]() The airport’s history... ![]() I love how they glance over the Nazi and US Army years… ![]() Coat of Arms… ![]() Model of the Flugplatz… ![]() US Army… ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Hanger in ruins… ![]() Into the new hanger complex... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Engines... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() X-test plane... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() BMW power… ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Rockets… ![]() V2 rocket motor… ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() East German Luftwaffe… ![]() DDR… ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() One of ours from spangdahlem AFB in the Eiffel… ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This plane was found in 80m deep cold lake water! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() RC planes… ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() WWII trainer… ![]() ![]() ![]() Another BMW plane engine… ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Tower… ![]() Weather station… ![]() ![]() Weather station sensors and runway… ![]() One of the oldest planes in Germany… ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() East German plane… DDR… ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A cool watch in the museum’s gift shop… ![]() The front entrance of the museum… ![]() A look at the museum from the other side… ![]() ![]() The quiet little street the museum is located on… ![]() Just down the street from Oberschleißheim is Dachau concentration camp. Just follow the signs that say: “Dachau KZ”. It looks to me that the Germans would really not have this place around anymore. I don’t remember this wall from the last time I was here. There is a museum inside and gives you idea of the madness the Nazi’s were up too during the war. ![]() Dackel A direct link to all my photos: http://s764.photobucket.com/albums/xx283/Dackelone/Deutsches%20Museum%20-%20Flugwerkt%20Schleissheim/ IF you only have time to go to one (out of three) of the Deutsche Musuems… I would suggest to go see the Traffic museum in downtown Munich. It is my favorite one. Deutsches Museum Verkehrszentrum http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=402730 |

Theres a really great museum up in Koblenz that has allot of WW2 etc... memorbilia in it. It is like 4 floors of everything from small arms, Stg 44's to mp 9's, to tanks, Jagerpanther and T-55 cut away etc. It's also just down the road from the Remagen Bridge. Went to Dachau last summer when my father-inlaw visited. That was quit an experience.

I have been to Sinsheim and Speyer. No, it is not one of those museums (I think) that FDM68 was referring too. Sinsheim and Speyer are all on ground level. No floors. So there must be a new museum that is calling out to my camera! ![]() I think Nick (Elsabor67) was talking about a flugplatz (airport) that held races on it. I know down in Stuttgart they held races on public roads - back in the day. Ala Targa Florio style. I do not know what airfield Nick was thinking about though. Nick??? Well... FDM68 came thru and sent me a PM about the museum he described above. Here is a link incase anyone would like to visit the museum. Sounds like a cool place. It is quite close to the 'Ring. Bundesamt für Wehrtechnik und Beschaffung Ferdinand-Sauerbruch-Straße 1 56073 Koblenz http://www.bwb.org/portal/a/bwb/kcxm...RS82XzIxX0lSVA!! Btw.... from a good friend of mine's auto travel (book in the works)... the museum at Koblenz is high above where the Rhine and Mosel meet... from my book.... Remagen is, of course, important as the birthplace of Caracciola. Wehrtechnik Museum Mayener Straße 127. Displays include a fully restored and operational PzKpfw V Panther used to bear the coffin of a Bundeswehr General in 1984, and a Sturmtiger / Tiger-Morser 38cm RW61 mounted on a Sturmmorser Tiger tank. Landmuseum Koblenz Festung Ehrenbreitstein. Located in the Ehrenbreitstein fortress high over the Rhine, the collection here includes an example of Otto’s four stroke engine, invented in Cologne. There is also information on August Horch, creator of Horch and Audi cars, who was born in nearby Winningen. During the 30 Year’s War (1618-1648), Prinz Bartolomeo Caracciolo commanded the Ehrenbreitstein fortress above Koblenz. Later descendents settled in Niederberg, Andernach and Remagen, the name changing from Caracciolo to Caracciola. A descendent, Rudi Caracciola became perhaps the greatest German driver of all time, though it is hard to compare him with Schumacher. Dackel NOTE: The correct address for the Bundeswehr's Museum is: WTS Museum aka the Bundeswehr’s Military Museum. WehrTechnische StudienSammlung (WTS) Mayener Strasse 85-87 56070 Koblenz Germany 0261.4001423 tel 0261.4001424 fax Email: WTS@bundeswehr.org www.bwb.org/organisation/wts/index or http://www.bwb.org/portal/a/bwb/kcxm...RS82XzIxX0lOUg!! Dachau KZ (concentration camp) is also very close to Ober Schleissheim (& the Welt). I'd say only a 15min car drive. Dachau is a somber place though. Many people do not realize these "camps" were located all over europe. (just look at my map photos bellow) we only remember the famous ones like Dachau, ect. Here are a few pics for you... |
