Got some great MPGs this weekend!

My wife and I drove to OBX (Outer Banks, North Carolina) for the weekend and I was surprised to get the gas mileage that I got in our 325i. I calculated the MPGs to be a bit lower (33.76), since when I pumped gas I was at ecactly 222 miles and it took 6.575 gallons to fill her back up. But even that's more than I thought I'd get. The car indicated an average speed of 62.xx MPH, but about half the driving was 75-80MPH (in a 70MPH zone), and the rest was in 45-55MPH zones.

To be fair, we did drive with the windows up and the A/C off, so that's probably the reason we got such great mileage. On the way back, tho, the car indicated 32.8, but it was 79 degrees and so we drove with the A/C on.

Not bad, eh?

So did I! My 335i go an indicated 33.1 mpg, averaging 59 mph on a 225 mile trip. Of course, the last hour of the trip I was going 75-80 mph and my MPG was still climbing. Only those 50 miles were freeway- the rest was on highway, and probably about 15-20 miles of light city. It was up and down in mountains, but probably had a total of about 1200' elevation loss over the course of the trip. I haven't pumped up yet, but usually on highway trips the gauge is pretty close.

Pretty phenomonal for a 300 hp 13.5 second car!

I can't get even close to those numbers in my wife's 328... my 335 though... 28 or higher depending on how fast I'm going on the highway.

Why, right here of course. We're not going to go around trolling every mpg-related post, boasting about how much better our mileage is. It's like when someone makes a topic about the 328's acceleration, and 335 guys jump in just to point out that their car is faster. Well, yeah. We know that. There's no need to repeat it in every single thread. It just screams insecurity.

But since you brought it up, I've seen upward of 48mpg in the sort of 60 mph, AC-off cruising the OP described. So there

Yeah we get better mileage while enjoying better performance. We get better mileage while going faster and having more fun accelerating and stuff like that. All for the same cost of fuel since now that winter is over diesel is now around the price of premium, maybe a little lower or a little higher in some places!

Vettes historically tend to get great mileage (>30 mpg highway in real life situations), and they got way bigger engines/more power than any 3 series... (out of the box, generally speaking...don't go comparing an 2011 M3 to a 1985 Vette now )

Good MPG numbers!
I did some travelling over the weekend and drove 325.6 total miles (approx 70% highway/30% city). My 335 calculated average was 27.1 MPG (computer 27.3).

Coincidentally...anyone know why DCTs tend to have worse gas mileage?

AC does affect mpg slightly, although not as much as in the past. The smaller and more efficient the car, the bigger the hit you'll notice though, because cooling will be a bigger proportion of the load. On the highway though, it typically doesn't take any more gas than rolling the windows down. You'll get your best mpg around 65 -70 deg when you don't really need any climate control but a little ventilation.

Vettes get good mpg too, but just due to the super-tall gearing. They have half the seating, too. I'm pretty pleased with 33.1. In my daily 11 mile city commute, I get about 21.5 in the winter, 23.5 in the summer (actual- not indicated)

That is some awesome mpg! I think the highest I got was 33 with cruise set on 80. It was way below freezing temps so I am thinking with the warmer weather I may be able to get it higher.

What are you talking about? It definitly does. I notice a 2-3 mpg hit on the highway during summer months.
