HPF Intercooler - Is This Normal?

I received my HPF intercooler last night directly from HPF and I have a few questions and concerns about the unit I was sent:

There seems to be a good amount of welding flux that is still stuck inside the intercooler where the core is welded to one of the end tanks:

Also, that flux is present on the outside of the intercooler at the corners where the core is welded to the same end tank:

My questions:

* Is leaving this much flux still stuck on the intercooler a common practice?
* Should I be worried about any boost leaks? Does this look like they tried to cover up a crappy weld job?
* What is the best way to clean this flux out?

Thanks for your time in advance!

That looks like shit. Quality control FTL. I don't think the flux will hurt anything but make sure there is no debris inside. Blow it out with compressed air and try to do a leak test.

That last pic has me concerned. I would email HPF about this. I'm positive they will take care of it asap if you went through them directly.

I bought mine second hand and didnt see anything of the nature. Never messed with welding flux before but perhaps cleaning it out with gasoline assuming HPF doesn't help with replacement..

Busch league. They should definitely pony up and give you a replacement. If the next is the same quality, I would look elsewhere for something of better quality.

Best,
Tony

I am not so sure about that. I've played with several different kinds of epoxy and this does not exhibit the same properties. I took a long screw driver and I poked at the material inside the intercooler stuck on to the end tank. It is VERY brittle, thin and it looks like residue. All of the epoxies that I've worked with are very hard, non brittle and very durable when hardened.

How do I go about cleaning the "cleaning agent"? Is it water soluble or do I need special chemicals to remove it?

I sent an email to HPF with pictures and a description of the problem. Hopefully, they'll either replace it or tell me how to get rid of that stuff...

All of them are like that. Helix intercoolers are made in China too. Nothing new...

Pour some acetone in there (like you would when cleaning out blowby), should clean it right up.

Done! I was just trying to get as much input as possible and also as a precaution in case they try to feed me BS. I highly doubt that'll be the case. Most probably this is some residue left over during the welding of the end tanks. I'll wait for HPF's response and I'll take it from there.

Vasil,

Definitely not normal, and very abnormal for something like that to make it out of QC out of HPF.

They stand behind their product 100% and you will be given a fresh new one that is thoroughly gone through and in perfect shape.

Email me if you need anything at all!
