Running Meth and Tune Only

I seen a few weeks back a (I Think) Was Car and Driver article about them buying a 335i (possibly a 135) and putting it on Meth, Tune, and Nitrious and not really saying anything about FMIC, DP's Etc.

If some of the more knowledgeable tuners could weigh in on that, Are you going to have problems? What is the disadvantages?

Im considering getting meth before a FMIC and DP's if it produces more power, and its a MUCH easier install then DP's

I think it was Matt at Snow Performance who bought a 135 and added meth, tune (JB4) and nitrous to the car and it performed awesome.

correct it was a 135 with JB4, Meth, and nitrous. It made something like 400RWHP.

Im doing meth before downpipes, but I got FMIC first because Im down here in HOT florida.

I never liked running nitrous, but im sure if you have all the safety fail safes in place it should pull like a monster.

Mike,

Is that "meth only" map a stock 335 with just JB4 and Meth? NO FMIC, DPs, Intake etc.? Is that running Nitrous?

I'm running a Procede and a PWM kit at the moment, with no other mods. I hope to run over to the dyno this week. Certainly this set of mods appears to yield the best "bang of the buck" in terms of dollars per unit of power, and a solid, reliable methanol kit will probably enhance stock longevity of the motor given an appropriate maintainance regimen. (Turbos are another matter. These little things are working hard with stock DPs and cats, but I expect there will be some viable big turbo options by the time they expire.)

Mike,

What boost were those dynos done at? Meth will really shine at high boost - high RPM. Meth + tune is the best bang for the buck you can do with this car.

This is something that most people think, but I don't agree. I've argued this before, and most everyone disagrees. As far as turbos are concerned, compressor is working harder with DPs due to increased flow of the engine (after peak efficiency). Now you will build more backpressure in the exhaust manifold with more restrictive exhaust, and the negative effect will be heat... but your compressor is more efficient with the reduced flow. I guess the question is what would be the total turbo heat difference... I wonder if there's EGT data on this. Anyway, I think the turbos are fine... at the same boost pressures. Of course DPs allow less boost for same power which is beneficial.

Well Ive been running a Tune/Meth setup since I practically bought this car. My warning to others was that the stock cats may not like this so called "abuse" over-time. Mine are still intact however.
EGT's should be in check spraying enough meth but I have no personal data on that subject.

A good Tune/Meth setup alone will yield a good 400WHP (combined with a DCI). Or 50-60WHP increase of a tune only setup if done right.

Combined with my newly acquired WW meth setup I can go back to stock on this car in under an hour ready for the oh so welcoming dealer visits that never seem to leave us.

The meth only run is a 100% stock 135i right down to the rims and runflats using a JB4, WW meth kit, and a DCI. The stock baseline was around 275rwhp.

Yes it appears true, from looking at the graphs above, You get 400 whp with tune + meth only and DCI. Cost of this setup is estimated at ~ $1200.... A gain of over 100 whp over stock.
Adding FBO's at ~ cost of $1500-2000 gains only 30 added whp over this setup. Pretty clear where the most gains per dollar are!

An additional benefit as Jeff mentioned above is that it is very easy to undo these mods of tune + meth for a dealer visit (under warranty) if needed.

Thats exactly correct. A car with FMIC and DP was dynoed later on and made approx another 30WHP thereafter. Methanol is quite the game changer. Although people need to realize methanol kits do require constant attention/undestanding ETC.

A JB4 PnP and WW Meth Kit and DCI are 1,053.00 Best $ to HP ratio you can come up with.

I'll have to do a pull tomorrow or something. It's raining here and looking at my past logs that channel was turned off for some odd reason.

Here is fairly recent log (no WGDC shown).

Its a 3rd gear pull, I go into 4th but as soon as I hit 4th I shut down thats why it looks crazy. Basically I double tapped the Pedal thinking i should keep doing the datalog but I decided not to LOL.

We have

17.5 Peak boost tapering to high 15's near redline.

11.9 AFR

Stellar ignition (10+ throughout the entire RPM range)

IAT top out at ~90 F (It was over 95 degrees outside with plenty of humidity).
