Clunking/clicking noise while reversing and braking?
I have 3,800 miles first of all... 2012 e92 335xi 6mt.
I reverse out and brake ( clutch, brake ), then shift into neutral. But, during this process I hear this clunk or odd noise coming from the rear side when I use the brakes. This kind of scares me, but it doesn't happen all the time... Usually first thing in the morning only...

I have a 2008 335i (at) and have the same problem, though I can't be sure that it is coming from the rear (I think it is, but am not 100% about this). I usually only hear it in the mornings, and it is gone by the time the car warms up.
Does anyone have any idea what this is? |

It happens in mine also and I just had them changed. It stops after the first or second time I press the brake. I believe its the abs checking the brakes. Kind of like a self test. It feels like its coming from the back right....right?
Can any car experts back me up? Or it might be a loose spring... I wouldn't worry about it doesn't seem like a big deal.

Both my e90 and previous e46 made this "clunk" noise upon braking in reverse (immediately after shifting into reverse from drive).

It's normal. Characteristic of floating calipers.

I have heard a noise similar to what you are describing: When I am reversing, after recently starting the car, and I hit the brakes while still rolling backwards, I hear a thunk, or a thud.
I looked it up once, and I heard that it is the brake pads "setting" or the ABS doing a self-check. If upon start-up and reversing this is the only time you hear this, then I would say don't worry about it. If you hear it in other situations, then maybe look more deeply into the issue. Do a quick forum search and let us know what you find.

same with my 06 e90. only during morning. I thought it has something to do with the AT because it only happens when I put in Reverse and the car isn't moving. at 70k miles now and the car is still as good as new. I don't service anything more than what the computer says. so don't worry about it.

I took my car into the shop when I first heard the noise and had one of the mechanics ride along with me. He told me the same thing that some of the other posters mentioned - brake pads shifting.
I thought that they were just feeding me BS for awhile. It's nice to know that it actually is normal. |

I had this problem on my e46 m3 back in 2007. After i installed H&R coil over shocks and new bushings with new control arms the CLUNK went away. After i sold my m3 in 2011 and got the 335i coupe the same shit started happening at 1600 miles on the car. Also, i have friends with my same car and the 335is but they dont have this problem. Even though the dealer fed me with that whole oh its normal bullshit, it is obviously NOT normal because if it was normal then every single 3 series would have had this issue. I dont know about you but if i am paying all this money for this car, i dont want any retarded sounds coming out of it lol. I am gona take mine in to the dealer this week and have them change the bushings or whatever they need to do to get rid of the sound. On mine it happens every fucking time im backing up or on 1st gear. I even feel the CLUNK from the brake pedal as well.
oh and also, i had someone pay close attention to the calipers when i went in reverse and he said the calipers and brake pads do not move at all. So that whole " the calipers just shift" is not accurate. IF SOMETHING THAT IS HAPPENING IS CONSIDERED NORMAL FROM THE DEALER, IT NEEDS TO BE IN THE BMW MANUFACTURER POLICY BOOK. FOR EXAMPLE, ALL BEAMERS REQUIRE 1 QT OF OIL ADDED EVERY 800 MILES OR SO FOR THE FIRST 7000 MILES. THAT IS LISTED IN THEIR BOOK. THEY SHOULD HAVE THIS LISTED IN THERE ALSO AND LET BUYERS KNOW THAT BTW YOU ARE GOING TO HEAR SOME STUPID CLUNKING NOISE FROM YOUR BRAKES. |

It is perfectly normal, but the reason some of our cars do it and some don't is due to the manufacturing tolerances on the brake pads. If a pad is on the lower end of the scale (Akebono euro pads are known for this), then you'll hear an audible click due to the shifting within the bracket. This can happen with any brake pad, including OEM, it just all depends if the tolerances have stacked in your favor or not. Industrial engineering 101

I never had this issue until I got my rear brakes replaced by the dealership back in March.. Now I hear it every morning. I think it's normal though.
