1M owner's manual break-in error?
Could the 5500 RPM break-in restriction actually be a copy/paste error from the E9x M3 manual?
Exhibit 1: 5.5k isn't *that* far away from the 7k limiter on the 1M, but pretty far from the M3's 8.4k limit. Exhibit 2: My PCD delivery rep indicated a 4.5k break-in should be respected, which is in agreement with the 335/335is manual recommendation. Exhibit 3: Other errors are know to exist. In the 1M manual, a comment regarding engine warm-up reads: "During the warm-up phase, the high-performance V8 engine runs a little more roughly due to its emissions control system." Just a little something for the uber-anal engine break-in guys to ponder...just think of all the damage that extra 1k worth of forbidded RPM may have caused. ![]() Last edited by E30 Racer; 12-15-2011 at 03:00 PM. |

I say rev it up and let it rev down.... my 135 has never burned oil and it was broken in hard.
Even when I followed the dealerships guidelines of 1 oil change every 12 months my car never needed oil to be added in between services. |

IMO, the manual's rev limit is just a way of saying drive at 75% of the performance limit.... there to protect the manufacturer?
I break my engines in like this over past few years... http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm Works for me. My 135i never uses any oil and pulls really well. My 1M will be getting the same treatment, hot oil & changing oil is the key here. What you should avoid during first 1000 mls are hard starts/launches, hard stops, dyno etc. The drive-line needs to be run in too.

My Euro Delivery agent also advised me 4500 rpm during break in. I was able to pretty much adhere to this for the roughly 800 miles of my delivery and until I was at nearly 1100 miles.

If it were that big of an issue, BMW would set rev limit to 5500 RPM for the first 1200 miles or the first 20 hours of run time.
