Little history on that.
http://www.bmwccbc.org/misc/tech-and-trivia/bimmer.html Bimmer vs Beemer Enthusiasts vs others Definitions: Bimmer - proper accepted slang for BMW cars. Most people don't know this. Beamer/Beemer - proper accepted slang for BMW motorcycles. You will hear this term used incorrectly by many people. Bummer - When you get a speeding ticket. Bitter - Another German car. Very rare; hand built. So just why is a BMW car called a 'bimmer' not a 'beemer' or 'beamer'? The answer in part lies in knowing some BMW history and what came first. All real BMW enthusiasts know that BMW got a big start on two wheels, what many call the real BMWs. In those days, BMW motorcycles were quite active in racing, and one of their competitors at the track was often the BSA bikes. Well as things would have it, a track slang developed, and the BMWs were usually referred to as 'beemers' and the BSAs were referred to as 'beesers'. So, of course for any true enthusiast, there is no way that a BMW car could be called a 'beemer', so they were called 'bimmers'. Unfortunately, in the US and Canada, and perhaps other countries, there was a time (kind of still is) where for various reasons, a BMW owner was considered an upwardly mobile person, and of course due to the fun in driving their BMWs most all of them had big grins on their faces. Hence it is little surprise that the non enthusiast types out there incorrectly labeled BMW cars and their owners as 'beamers' or 'beemers'. |

Although I doubt there's anything to worry about, if they really are driving it, why don't you make arrangements to go with them and drive back yourself. Problem fixed.

FWIW, back in my day, 50s, It was beamer cars and beamer bikes. I refuse to change.
And as an aside, the teenagers say something is 'Sick' or 'Bad' when the thing is really good....don't understand that...guess the minors think it's funny...oh well... Slang Dictionary beemer definition [ˈbimɚ] 1. n. a BMW automobile. (See also beamer.) : I had to sell my beemer when the stock market crashed. You should definitely ask. I thought the same but they actually indeed drive my car back so I had 280ish added on my speedo when I got a brand new car. I was pissed but they gave me some free stuff to make up for not being clear. =/

hahaaha, a dealer gave me a loaner to drive, it still had the loaner car # on it in the wind shield...then 3 days later, my SA wants me to drive the car back down because "a customer bought it blahblahblah"
There's no way I'm going to make a 220 mile trip JUST to swap loaners because someone bought it, so i made them wait until the weekend haha |

BMW logo
The name-change to Bayerische Motoren Werke compelled management to devise a new logo for the company, therefore the famous BMW trademark is designed and patented at this time. However, they remained true to the imagery of the previous Rapp Motorenwerke emblem (which was designed by Karl's brother, Ottmar Rapp). Thus, both the old and the new logo were built up in the same way: the company name was placed in a black circle, which was once again given a pictorial form by placing a symbol within it. By analogy with this, the blue and white panels of the Bavarian national flag were placed at the center of the BMW logo. Not until the late 1920s was the logo lent a new interpretation as representing a rotating propeller.[3] The BMW Trademark, called a "roundel", was submitted for registration on the rolls of the Imperial Patent Office, and registered there with no. 221388 on 10 Dec 1917.
