Late model 328xi slushbox loner review
So my dd is a 2010 328i 6-speed sedan. I have the M-Sport package and premium package. As part of my purchase a few weeks ago I wanted tint and the ugly wood trim swapped out for the aluminum. I dropped it off yesterday and have a late model(10\'-11\') loner. It\'s a 328xi slush. Within 5 minutes I hated it. Not even talking about options(backup sensors, adaptive hid\'s etc) this thing just is piss poor. If this was the first BMW I had driven before I found mine I would have walked away completely from the brand. It stutters off the line even under normal acceleration. Can\'t seem to find which gear it wants to be in until 30. Doesn\'t maintain gear under the slightest incline and it\'s like a earthquake is happening everytime it switches gear. The manual shift is a joke. There\'s a 6 minute wait for gear changes, downshifts don\'t fully engage what seem like even longer, and it\'s not a good feeling. The steering is numb. It\'s soft around turns. Around tight turns(such as a tight uturn) it\'s like my jeep in 4wd on pavement. Lurches around and makes noises like it wants to break.
I\'m just so surprised at the difference of the same model with just a few differences. I\'m happy for all y\'all who buy a slushy with no sport package, as I\'m sure you enjoy your latte more than the driving experience, but I think it is hands down one of the worst cars I\'ve ever driven. Thankfully I pick up my car in a couple hours and can give this piece back Thanks for reading.

It's interesting you say that, because I had a 328xi loaner with 200 miles on it and I was starting to think that the transmission or the AWD system was broken!

Is this one of those typical "omg steptronic is so horrible, and manual is so much better" threads in disguise?

My thoughts exactly!!! Maybe he should try one with a little more torque The shifts using the paddles at 6K rpm is just fine by me on a 335!

335i with auto or manual has pretty much the same acceleration, 328 manual and auto are very different. |

I drive the cars in my sig and have driven countless 328xi loaners. I don't think they're terrible cars, but the xi minus the sport package is definitely a very different car from mine, in a bad way. To me the sport package is essential to really getting the most out of the platform, and the AWD just aggravates the lack of sport package.

DS or M modes are great; it is the best manumatic interface in the industry IMO. I play in M mode most of the time D mode is for highway or masochists. |

TBF buying an E90 with a slushbox is like making a supermodel wear a Burqa.

The extra weight and slushbox do truly ruin the 328 which is a great car with a decent transmission - would like to see it with a ZF auto as that is a much better trans.

I agree. The transmission is much smoother in M. Does not shift as fast as a DSG would, but still good. Auto in D is particularly bad on cold start in cold weather. Still, you can get more out of D but you can't drive it like it has a linear throttle. D is really an eco mode. DS should be the default if you are expecting performance. M is the best of all.
If you're only going to drive the 328 auto for a day or two you won't have time to adapt to it. Yes- you would not need to adapt to a better transmission, but you can learn to manage the lag from start. |

I drive a 328i 6-speed. I've had two 328i automatic loaners in my day and I found the transmissions inexcusably jerky. The last time I took the car back, though, I raised my concerns and I was told that the autos have "adaptive transmission" in them, which adjusts to the driver's habits. Seems possible...

Maybe it's just me but I had a 335xi loaner once and hated it. The AWD + slushbox just ruined it for me completely. Plus I like NA engines more.

Funny that you find such a difference from a 328i to IX, as if its really anything to make waves, other than if you live in snowbelt the XI blows you away.
You should drive a 335, the 328 will feel like a golf cart... |

Are you just another ignorant manual elitist, by any chance? Looks like.
These days, you can have no more manuals in most Ferrari if that tells you a clue. Because with a statement as "Auto's/DCT's Are For Posers..", you have obviously none. BTW, check the 02/2012 Car&Driver in which they compare the 911 to others (GT-R and Z06). All automatics / DCTs, mind you. It automatics / manumatics works as well as my GM unit and with more important, a proper interface that loves to play, I don't mind. I no longer miss that 3rd pedal. Here is how I got rid of my addiction. Last edited by Saintor; 12-25-2011 at 10:25 AM.. |
