Black smoke when hitting full throttle

So I assume this isn\'t a good thing...could this be seals, excessive oil burning or is it normal for turbo cars?

is this accompanied by a corresponding loss of oil?

general rule of thumb is coolant makes white smoke, oil black.

black smoke is typical of improper burning... oil mixing in with fuel. You don't get or have any thrown codes when this happens?
i don't know details, i'm just trolling... lol

bluish would indicate oil burning... moisture brings white, and rich running brings black.

not knowing any history, i would start with a tune up... air filter, plugs etc.

maybe an italian tune up might be in order as well!!!

It's a 2008 335i vert. From what I understand the recall work has been done. It's got about 67k km (40k miles?) I have warranty until may so maybe I'll complain and try and get a tuneup?

No codes tho.... I don't wanna be paranoid

She's running rich at WOT. I really wouldn't be too alarmed. Seen a few factory cars that will puff black when they are flogged.

Clean the maf?
Replace map?
Plugs dirty?
Ignition timing off?

All things to look at.

completely normal, for any car. it's essentially fuel that escapes through the rear pipes under WOT that isn't completely burnt. if it's blue, then you're burning oil, meaning you have a leak or bad seals or gaskets (that or you could have oil in your plugs - i don't own a 335i but i've heard it's common).

And because the new BMW diesels don't do that, it does suggest improper burning of oil...

If you're burning oil, the blue mole would also be accompanied by a gradual loss of oil. Keep checking your levels.

If black, not as much an issue
