I would buy two new PSS for the front. generally speaking by the time your front tires are worn out you will have replaced your rear tires at least twice! Maybe two and half times!

I would think so, at least on dry roads at the limit. Or think if them causing less understeer!

I would stick with PS2s, I think they're better than the PSS.

Based on all the other glowing reports on the PSS model, I would be interested in hearing your criteria for deciding the PS2 tires are better.

+1 on what Bill said, only rave reviews for PSS in all my findings and talking with other drivers.

Thinking I might go with PSS just for the rears if and when the go. Let the front PS2s run a while longer and replace with PSS when they go, is that too simple

This is completely my personal opinion, but I don't think that mixing tyres is a good idea. When my rears are cooked, I'll be replacing all four corners with PSS!

I have to say that PSS and PS2 are pretty different tyres in terms of grip and handling behaviour so changing all four should be the ideal thing to start with. If I would be forced to change just 2 in my car, then I would put PSS at the rear since PS2 on the front are not that bad, at least on dry weather conditions. On the other hand, traction capacity is vastly different between the two. As a result, your plan of PS2 rear and PSS front does not sound very well to my ears.

I've opted for a replacement PS2 on the front and like others, I will replace all 4 for PSS when the rears are gone

These PSS are certainly not cheap though!
In the States, the PSS are cheaper than the PS2.
