'12 e92 335is- 2nd HPFP in two weeks?
Hi gents. My 335is is back in the shop again when it wouldn't start this morning. This is 2 weeks removed from the car sputtering and shutting down completly at a busy red light. At least this time it was my driveway. Last time they replaced the HPFP which one would think would fix the issue. They haven't inspected it yet but now they're saying something about a possible MAF issue. I have a sneaking feeling they a) thought they fixed it, and didn't or b) are trying to avoid another fuel pump. Amazingly I had a e39 M5 for years without it ever breaking down. Now I have a brand new IS and it's completly failed twice. My question is my car completly sputters and dies violently while backfiring. The reseach I've done on the N54 and HPFP all leads me to believe you can still drive the car. Mine won't stay running if it starts. Any chance my service guys at BMW have no clue? It's a lease under warranty but it seems like they're setting me up for a pitfall here. Thoughts? Thanks in advance for listening.
Best wishes, GolfProGiff |

My 07 now has 62k miles. I am on pump #5 in the last 33K miles....Between the fuel pumps, plugs and coil packs, I figure I through a CEL or Misfire light about every single day I put the right foot down.
There is a post somewhere about what the most memorable moment is that you had with your BMW. Mine will be the day I get rid of it. Hope you have better luck than me. They will figure out the problem with your car. It might take a couple trips to the shop but they will get it fixed. From my experience they will just keep replacing parts until the car stops going into limp mode.

Interesting, I was talking to the tech at my dealer and he swears that they ha e made changes ton later model N54 HPFPs to all but eliminate the failure issue.
Maybe someone with more info will chime in.

I had a 2011 335is and I put 40k miles on it
At about 22k miles I started to have loss of power and extended crank etc sorta similar to hpfp issues Well what it ended up being was the two middle fuel injectors being clogged and damaged... I drove it in a reduced state of performance for so long... The service center at first was only gonna replace the two bad ones but got special permission from BMW main to replace all 6. Afterwards it was like the first day I got it. So it could be the injectors leading to hpfp... It took forever for the engine light to come on it for it... I feel special because the injectors are expensive So you know I had two separate 335i's that had a slough of hpfp problems Prob due to crappy fuel... One was bought back and the other traded... I loved the 335is but it was wrecked... I traded 335i on M3 then went to 335is then F10 M5 then back to M3... The S63 has issues with cracking from heat so I'm told So maybe it's the injectors... I love the 335is and 1M but worry about long term reliability... Yes the hpfp issue was supposed to be resolved in MY2011 but the newer M3 is amazing... |

That's not too comforting. Problem is I've now lost faith in driving her. I call it my "comfy" M because in my opinion unless you are on a track or really driving hard, you'd be hard pressed to need anymore than the IS delivers. You can run so many modes for different driving experiences. I really can't complain too bad as I know they'll take care of it. I have a great relationship with the GM and had the opportunity to teach Mr. Purves and Mr. Kramer for a period of time. I'm just getting sick of the looks from my fellow coworkers who have Audis taking shots at my "courtesy loaner vehicle" May just be paranoia too but it seems as if every time I look I see a new BMW on a flatbed. I just hope they are sold cars in transit. Still searching for my perfect BMW I guess...

Bummer man. I talked with a friend who has been a in the BMW parts and service division for 35 years and he said after a few attempts at rebuilding the HPFP they finally seem to be holding up. I would make sure they're not using the older HPFP as a replacement. There is another thread somewhere that gives you the last few digits of the part number for the newer and older pumps.. Good luck

I actually researched that after I received it back. The new part # they gave me is not the one listed in the BMW corporate memo to dealerships. I'm not even sure it's a FP issue yet. 1st 20k were fine without issue. I know one thing for sure. If I was purchasing a 335is I would have it serviced and checked way more than BMW wants to see it. I'm not a grease monkey, but there sure are some high tech goodies under there that probably require some PM at a minimum.

It's my "loaner" right now (328 lux) Can't stand the on/off thing. It's borderline unsafe losing presious 10th's of a second from a quick acceleration from stop. Good news is you can program it out completely if you don't want to drive around in S mode all day or press the off button prior to every stop. I also notice it feels like a much larger vehicle than my IS. The iDrive seems more advanced too. At least in this model. EcoMode is cool I was getting 45+ mpg at one point and it coasts like a glider in that mode. Sport mode almost makes the 4 cylinder feel like a 6. It's very peppy and responsive for city and freeway driving. Overall a very nice car and I don't believe it uses the N54 Turbo. I'm pretty sure it's a new engine.

We ordered my wife a X1 MSport in Alpine White with all the trimmings. Needless to say she's excited. She picks it up in two weeks.

This makes me worried that even though they have extended the warranties on the HPFP's to 10 years, that they may replace everything else they can think of not under warranty before addressing the HPFP.

They weren't able to replicate the issue and are starting it without issue, yet I can't it yet. Guess they have to find something to bill BMW for ;-)
