maybe I'm biased because I JUST picked up my 135is----but the E82 was a car I lusted after since the day it was launched. It is unique and unusual in a good way. It feels small and 'pure' if that word can even be used for modern cars.
I'm sort of up in the air about the styling of the F22: it's more generic and consumer friendly. It looks 'soft' so far but I will withhold full judgement til I at least see all the pics or see one in person. it's also larger and more bulbous looking. it's lost the straight edges and sharpness on our cars. I guess I'll be more interested if there is an M2 coming----but currently I'm not really very taken with the new car. Performance wise the M135i comes with very similar spec to a 135is or 135i. I guess the 228i will be quicker than the 128i, but loses that glorious N52 for a generic 4 banger so it's kind of a let down. oh and electric steering----eek! not sure what to think about that after my previous test drives in the current 3-series (not good!). what do you guys think? you can see some reveal pics in the 2addicts section of the forum. I'm sure some of you are trading in for it....as some people are really excited about the 2er. Last edited by IEDEI; 10-22-2013 at 08:51 AM.. |

I really enjoy the overall styling of the 2-series, but for me, and this may be true for others, but electric steering I feel is a huge disconnection from the road. Having driven electric and hydraulic, it is a completely different feel that I'm not sure I am OK with. I will say that from the pictures I have seen, the exterior looks pretty damn good and would love to sit in one for comparison to the E82.
Also, the N52, for me at least, has been a very tamed motor and the car overall is a blast to drive. 2series going into a 4 cylinder platform for the 228i is a bummer to hear as well. I chose to come to an I6 from a 4 banger and the response and sound is not comparable. Not really sure what to think yet, and I really would like to test drive one when they come out, but for now, I still think an E82 is much more of a drivers car and don't think I would give mine up. Just my two cents. |

I can't wait to check out the m235i in person. I can't see it ever replacing my e82, maybe supplementing it though
![]() My biggest gripe with the 2 series (this holds true for most current gen bmws as well) is that obnoxious hood cut line. From seeing an f30 in person, unsurprisingly it's not as bad with distance.

It looks good but I don't see a big enough difference (performance, styling, etc) for me to get one to replace my 135i.
Now the M4, that's a different story. ![]() |

I always felt the same way. I sort of made up my mind in 2008 and never reconsidered. Friends who bought 1-series cars puzzled me a bit... I couldn't see myself in one. During the research phase of replacing my G37, the 135i showed back up on my radar, but I thought the 335i would be the only way to go. Driving E82s, E90s, E92s, and F20s completely changed my mind. I knew the E82 was "the car"... and started looking at it from a different perspective. The styling has grown on me in a big way. Now I even appreciate the styling of the rear of the car.

Looks:
Front - The F22's front bumper is just sexy! I'm sorry but M-sport E82 front just doesn't do it for me compared to the M235i's front. There's something about that headlight design that I dislike yet I am happy that they didn't do the stupid grill-headlight thing. The E82 front would look better than the M235i if it had Euro headlights (and 1M front but that's not fair). Side - The side view of both cars are nearly identical. The F22 has the advantage of a smoother and seemingly lower roof height than the E82. The E82 seems to have better proportions in terms of lengths and stuff. We have better side mirrors (and wheels if 313's or 269's) lol. Rear - No rear shots yet. The M badge still feels wrong but I like how they tried to add some distinction with the different font. ------------ Performance: Straight line - I don't think it will be much quicker than our cars. Of course, BMW might give the new PPK (335hp) standard on the M235i. (I wish we can use this new PPK.) The new 8AT tranny is supposedly great enough to compete with our DCT. Plus the weight savings (100lb) help them. Despite these two major factors, I don't think the gap would be that great and isn't worth it enough for me to cast aside my E82 for this new car. Cornering - The M235i is claimed to be able to beat the 1M around the track (or was it the 'ring specifically?) If that claim were true, it will put out AMAZING numbers! Something we can't really fight against (unless you're a 1M drive...then again that's not fair). They also have the optional (M Performance) LSD. Driving Feel - Well, it has EPS. I have driven any of the newer BMW's but it's supposedly not as amazing as our steering. Then we have the ride. I've ridden in an F30 (sport line) and it felt a tad floaty relative to my car. If the M235i will be similar to it, our cars feel better. They also probably have little things people mind that I don't like the Auto start-stop and it could have the artificial sound thing. Of course, all of these are just assumptions and speculations so the M235i could feel better than an E30 M3 or worse than a piece of crap. ------------- Overall: I am anticipating for its arrival because I can't wait to see BMW's approach on improving and evolving the E82. I can't say I would get one at the cost of my beloved E82 but so far this upcoming car is shaping up pretty well. I can't wait for the rear shots! |

I will just hate the assumption people will make when they see my 128 and say it's a 4-banger...... Why did they have to badge it with the x28... 4 cylinders should be reserved for the family sedan Honda accord or Toyota camery.

I like the way the new F22 looks, I also like the lines of the F30 M-Sport - a F24 Gran Coupe M235 would have been an ideal 2014 version of the E46 ZHP.
However, when it was time to replace my E90, I drove the F30 335 M-Sport with 6MT expecting it to drive a little bigger, but maybe like an E39 540... Um, no. It's a soft and comfy highway cruiser with excellent acceleration and the latest technology. The steering feel was lousy, but the deal breaker for me was how soft the suspension was - it really didn't like undulations in a high speed sweeping turns. Yes, for a couple grand, i could have fixed that with either the BMW performance suspension, or some coil-overs, but I expected the M suspension to feel more like the E90 or E46. I actually hope the M235 drives more like the cars we wanted, as the 3 and 4 have moved to a new place in the market. I bought my 135is, so I'm in for the long run - primarily because of the hydraulic steering and small size. The E82 isn't a beauty queen by any measure, but looks are personal preference, and I like the proportions. It reminds me of the 2002 and E21 with the upright stance. That said, I really like the way it drives, sounds and handles. |

I bought my 128i because I can't stand BMWs turbo 4s and the turbo 6 is nice but its not pure. Also the electric steering is soulless.
The N52 is a marvelous motor, and I have one of the last 1s. I've very content.

A more luxurious, softer car with EPS = I am keeping my N54 E82 for a while and then buying a 2013 e92 Performance Package M3 or the C7 Corvette.

I agree. I hate the space BMW added between the front hood line and the upper portion of the grille. IMO, the hood's line should meet the grille like their previous designs. I hated the F30 mainly because of this feature...

picI absolutely hate the new 3 Series. Hideous in every regard. I can only hope that BMW gets it right with the 2 & the 4 Series. Eventually, I'll be in the market for an M4 or a C63 AMG coupe, if the M4 does not please me. Cheers/B

If they stick that stop/start thing into all the 2 series cars I'll stop being interested and start looking elsewhere.

I have only heard good things about the C7 steering, not so much about the bimmer's. The s2k and RX-8 had EPS as well, but those had good feedback, so I am not sure why BMW can't get their shit right. I drove a F30 335i w/ M-Sport pack and the steering in that car was absolutely horrible. So if the F22 is coming out with the same rack, then

The 2 to me looks like a smaller version of an E46 coupe (which I had). Even though I really liked the styling of the E46, the E82 is simply unique. No confusing this car with any other BMW.
As others stated the 2 simply looks bland to me. As far as perfomance is converned we'll have to wait and see. So far there are very few cars that can top the 135i. |

It looks good. Not a fan of the new hood line found on all the new models, not a huge fan of the rear, but it looks much more sleek. I prefer the 1er's more unique look but then again I bought a 128i knowing about the 2 series coming out so obviously I'm a little biased. The new look is definitely more mainstream and it'll probably be more popular.
