Rear wheel bearings

Anybody on here changed the rear bearings themselves?

In the process after managing to borrow a 36mm 12point socket and some large circlip pliers...

I've come up against the dreaded stuck drive shaft splines in hub situation. Not much fun and as yet it hasn't moved.
Anyone else had the pleasure of trying to shift it?

Dan I have done a couple before at work and every single one is the same,the driveshaft is pressed into the bearing,and not just seized.Theres a special tool for doing them it's a bolt on press that attaches to the hub which pushes the shaft out.I remember thinking to myself at the time that without the tool this would be near impossible.!

I'm admitting defeat. Not a great feeling.

The frustrating part is I got a bearing extraction/installation kit buy didn't get to use it :-(

That's not good,I've seen driveshaft pullers for BMW on eBay that might work.

May have some movement. Offside, which I was working on, was noisy as hell this morning. Got home and tightened it up a bit more. Damn those things are tight!

Anyway while it was up I had a quick go at the nearside and it appeared to move. Only a little but there is hope.
Made a home made solvent lubricant as suggested by the Americans; acetone and gear oil. Poured some of that in there and tightened it all up.

Weekend coming may be judgement day!!!

If you search it on youtube there is a way of doing it with out the pulling tool.

I was researching it when I thought a whine from the back once.

Possible by taking the hub and carrier off but just had 4 wheel alignment so not keen.

Will update with results!

I did both my rears when I fitted the m3 rear end to mine. Put it this way, I had get someone to remove it with a sledgehammer and punch.

The bearing itself was just like any other I've done and pretty simple as I've got a press at home.

Cleaning up the threads and greasing them allowed the driveshaft to slide back in really easily.

Exactly this... I have change multiple bearings and driveshafts on other cars but this is crazy tight!

The driveshaft/hub spines will be getting a nice clean and lube up upon refit.

Annoying as the bearing removal/replace itself would only take about 20mins afterwards.

I have a whine from the back of mine, jacked the car and there seems to be no movement from either back wheel. Out of interest what mileage was your car on?

101k now, they were the originals. Does it go away if you weave down the road?

Theres only 50k on mine. Its only really noticeable at higher speeds, im not sure i will check tomorrow.

Weaving seems to make no difference. Im wondering could the rear brake pad sensor be rubbing/making a noise as it says they are due in 900 miles but it hasnt dropped from that stated figure for a while?

I would say the brake sensors aren't going to make a whine. That would be a rubbing noise and only on one side.

Jack each side up and spin up by hand, if there's a faulty bearing it will be noticeably rougher sounding than a good side.There will be no movement In the bearing only a roughness/ noise.

As Kris says. I found it easier to hear if I dropped the caliper/pads off
