S55(M4) Engine swap in to a 135IS

I have been thinking of making a project out of my 135IS. I owned an E92 M3, M4, M2 and now the 135IS. The M4 and M2 were great and fast, but I hated the steering feel and size. I love the 1M and so I am thinking to transform mine into the 1M body kit and with the S55 Engine.

Anyone that have done similar work that can comment and various aspects including fit difficulties or problems to consider. I saw the video of the I35I turned into a 1M with the S65 engine and looked mean.

Also any advice will be welcome

Imo I donít see much of a point to swap a turbo I6 with another turbo I6.

If I were you and itching for a project, Iíd just go FBO with quality parts and fine tuned suspension. Maybe a 1M exterior conversion too. Thatís my dream lol

Gonna require deep pockets and the mod potential wont be as good as just sticking with the N54, building the engine, and moving to a larger single turbo.

As cool and unique the swap would be it's really expensive for not a whole lot more.

Sell the M4, fund the S85 project.

The IS is the N55. Yes, the engine can be found from 11-16k, there there is the installation and then any other component to ensure that mod works correctly.

But that power on a small factor would be great. The S55 is a great engine btw, dont sound as good hehe

Doc Race N55 single turbo then. S55 wont be plug and play, huge headache, and all for what exactly? 16k before install and fabrication costs for 150hp isn't just a waste, it's nonsensical.

Fortunately I found out about Speetech stage 3. It allows over 600HP, I may go that direction

I've been consider the same thing and it's probably not worth a full engine swap considering coding it to an OEM quality would be a nightmare. It would be more beneficial to do what BMW did for the M2 and move over parts from the S55 to the N55 that make sense; such as the Pistons, etc. etc. but at that point you may as well go with a stroker kit for the N55 from Vac Motorsports and a bigger Turbo.

Plus you're better off keeping the 135iS stock since it was a limited run build, and a little more rare than the 1M.

Stroker really doesn't make sense as it further limits how fast the engine can spin. What you want is to sleeve the block, allows higher rpm and a longer power band, leading to more power with a bigger turbo installed.

I like the idea, but to do it right, its easily a $40k swap. It just doesn't seem transformative enough. For $5k more you could have a complete f8x. Aside from dropping the motor in, which may not be too bad, as S55/N55 are extremely similar, getting the electronics to work correctly would be the biggest challenge. You would have to buy ALL of the s55 electronics and cooling and find someone with enough knowledge to make it work right.

I know someone who's done it. This person did everything the right way in my opinion. ALL of the electronics worked including M Dynamic Mode, and he also ran one of the really neat and hard to find BMW Performance steering wheels which was fully integrated as well. He even went so far as to swap in the NBT iDrive that replaced the CCC system. Again, all of it worked as if it were factory.

As I recall, this individual enjoyed the vehicle for a while and then traded it in for a new Fire Orange F80 or F82.

Sakhir Orange

OP, PM me. I've documented everything pretty decently. The biggest challenge was creating the custom set of electronics on getting everything to talk to each other. Tandem DME's were used for the process of signal conversion and manipulation for the CAN -> CAN2 / PT-CAN -> PT-CAN2 lines. The problem is the PT-CAN2 runs at a much higher rate than the older CAN, so occasionally the slave DME will reset and the engine shuts down. If I had unlimited time and money, I would have done it properly.

I doubt the rod ratio is changed that much, not to mention a stroker is likely going to be built with stronger AND lighter rods and pistons, so you can still raise the redline over the factory limit.

At the cost of block material. It's been done. It didn't work. Anytime you build an engine you would use better rods, bearings, and pistons. Now you bring up raising the rev limit too? That's a mighty big pie in the sky up there.

Why not get the M2 CS which supposedly comes with the S55 engine?
