Fueling: misfiring/white smoke N54
Hello BMW peoples, I need help resolving a fueling issue that I can’t figure out.
I have a pretty good knowledge and understanding of cars and components. Background: 08” BMW 135i w/ no major upgrades. Replaced Items since 2016 - Spark Plugs - Regular Oil Changes - Vanos Replacement - Plug Coils - Walnut Blastimg - Spark plugs again - Water Pump - Fuel Injectors Index 12 - LP Fuel Sensor - Other Fuel Senso - HPFP Alright, I started getting a hesitation at WOT and ended up replacing the plugs, coils, walnut blasting, and the Vanos. The hesitation was still there and I figured it was the common injector issue these engines have. I went out and picked up all 6 injectors index 12s and replaced them and coded them. The injectors worked for a couple of days but still gave me a hesitation at WOT. After a couple of days the vehicle became progressively worse with sputtering at start up and eventually always misfiring and throwing white smoke from the exhaust. The white smoke smells like unburnt fuel. At this point I switch back the old injectors and replace the spark plugs. The engine runs smoother on start up but puts out huge clouds of white smoke with the smell of fuel. I figured I’d start replacing the fueling system in the hopes I would catch the problem. I first replace the HPFP, and both fuel sensors in the engine bay. I then test the car wth the same results as before with both sets of injectors. The only fueling component I haven’t replaced is the in tank fuel pump. I’ve scoured the forums and google and cannot seem to find a resolution to this problem I’m having. The only hopeful piece of advice I found was to reset the fueling parameters for the pump blah blah blah. I’m not sure what all that means and I need further explanation. If anyone can give me new ideas that would be awesome. Thanks! |

I'm sorry to say that your second sentence is incorrect.
Find a local reputable mechanic and have them look the car over. By my math you've spent around $1,500 chasing your tail and still not fixed anything. At some point you have to throw in the towel and admit you don't know what you're doing. |

You didn't mention valve cover gasket or straight up valve cover.
Gaskets don't last forever and our plastic valve covers make development a crack from all the heat cycles. Could be a cause of that white smoke of yours. Have you checked spark plugs recently? Any oil on them? |

Update:
I replaced a faulty refurbished index 12 injector #3. The engine runs smoother and is no longer throwing a CEL for misfire, or misfire with low fuel level. The vehicle is still emitting smoke from the exhaust. Next step is to check the valve cover and fluids for any cross contamination that would indicate a HG issue. |
