Hey, digital photographers!

It's been a while since I've looked at digital cameras. I would like to maybe get a new digital camera. I want something small. I'd like something like my old Minolta Dimage Xt in terms of size, but I'd be willing to maybe go up to the size of one of the Canon digital Elph line.

What's good these days? I know Nikki is an SD500 user from her website. How about the rest of you? Any recommendations?

What do you think of the new Wi-Fi cameras? Do they live up to the promise of convenience?

Thanks in advance.

I will always go with a Canon. Just my preference. Good luck with whatever you get, and there are great deals on www.newegg.com , that's where I got mine.

Thanks, most of photography is really the camera, not the photographer.

This site has pretty good reviews + example pics:

As for cameras, I think Canons are the best.

CANONs are the best!!!
but for a good point and shoot camera that always gives outstanding results is The Sony DSC T1-7 any of those are great cams..its the credit card style one..
Im a photographer and carry around my canon20D with several lens and always carry the little sony as well for those quick shots when i dont feel like lugging the big cam around!

Agree about Canon, however I wouldn't buy anything from Newegg, I used to work there as a buyer, that place is pretty much a modern electronic sweatshop... . Plus you can always get a pretty gooddeal at B&H photo, Adorama...etc

I would recommed Canon 30D along with 17-40mm Canon L lens, 24-75mm F2.8 L lens and maybe a 70-200 F4 or F2.8 IS L lens. Some of the top of the line L lens have Image stabilize capbility, very nice feature. The new Nikon D200 is really nice as well. Of course if you got the dough, you can also go for some nice Medium format Pentax, Hasselblad or Mamiya, but then again that's more for studio protrait professional, and it was fun to use when I used borrow them from my school. I miss using the wetlab and dark room too, the joy of good old conventional photography

i agree. canons rock. the sony T models tend to have blur when you just point and shoot. sweet design, but not too much reliability. IMO.

Hmm...no Nikon fans?

I liked my Nikon SLR from back in the day. Something about Canon's interface just didn't click with my brain when they started the EOS line. I'm a bit afraid it will be the same with the Canon digital cameras, but they sure make compelling cameras.

I just got a Sony DSC-T9 (black), it's great so far. Very compact with a huge screen and I haven't had to charge the battery yet since I got it.

I took this pic this evening in the rain with low light and the flash turned off... it came out pretty clear.

It's even smaller in person then it appears to be in the pictures.

Of course it's clear when you resize the pic for web viewing, do a 100% crop and compare it with a D-SLR with a good lens, you'll see a major difference. Also the advantage of a D-SLR is the shutter speed, also Canon is very good at lowlight performance, ISO1600 image is the best in class.

Nikon/Nikkor user here. IMO Canon just doesn't have the pedigree in SLR that Nikon has. I simply don't remember anything exciting from Canon when I was craving an FM2 or a Leica R4. Even years later when the first pro DSLR wave hit (Kodak DCS series, Nikon D1, Fuji S1), Canon was not one of the big names.

Apparently Canon has come a long way since then, and I did buy a then much raved about Canon 300D in late 2003. While it was cool to have a real DSLR for a grand, it just didn't feel right. I knew I had to replace it with something better. I will be ordering a D200 soon to replace the D70, which was the successor to the 300D.

I've tried some Canon point-and-shooters, and I actually think they are pretty decent. As for Sony cameras, no offence but I don't have much good things to say about them.

Of course the SLR is going to take better pics, I know because I have one. You can't exactly carry it around in your pocket though can you?

Yes you can, only if you wear super baggy overalls (remember the late 80s, overall with one strap hanging? )

Yeah but then again, you forgot I wasn't responding to you , I responded to the poster that put up the Sony P&S pics...and good for you that you have all the L-lens. This is to the original poster, get a D-SLR if you want quality and a Canon P&S if you want something smaller, easier to carry
