Track Video: Epic battle with M3

Had a great time at the track yesterday at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway. This video is pretty long, but I thought I'd capture about 4 or 5 laps where a brand new M3 and I (in a 135i) got into quite a little battle. We were basically neck and neck. I even had to lift (stop accelerating) when I got close a couple times. But then, coming out of the corners, he was able to pick up speed much more quickly. Both of us were holding similar lines, except for when we came out of the bowl. As you'll see, I ran it wide while he tucked in on the exit to set up for the next turn.

HD VERSION HERE:

I had some driving lessons yesterday too. Never had any training and WOW... have I picked up some horrible habits. The person who taught me to drive stick shift, said "never let the clutch out without pressing the gas pedal or being in neutral." So for TEN YEARS I've been doing that, even on the track. So, at the track, I've been braking before turns, and shifting into gear while in the middle of a turn. Down-shifting ("engine braking") wasn't in my vocabulary. Now, as I brake before the big turns I hit the brake and let the clutch out, shifting into a lower gear right before turning in. It slows the car down and allows me to get onto the throttle and hold moderate acceleration throughout the turn. This increases traction and prepares the car to blast out of the corner sooner. Amazing! It still feels so wrong to let the clutch out while my right foot is still on the brake though.

Anyway, it was a really great day. I learned a ton.

cool video.

I think if you had a LSD you might be able to get around him.

Or more power. Or sticky tires. I think any little advantage would have given me the edge. hehe.

A LSD is like, what, $1k + installation?

I really enjoyed your video. Great music choice, and I love the little comments pop up, they made me laugh.

One suggestion I can make along the lines of down-shifting before a turn, try to down-shift where the car's rpm is lowest you want for the corner in order to save some life on your tranny, and also it will make your life easier on the rev. matching.

One story: I remember almost sand trapping my self in china beach at mid-ohio while trying to focus on my rev matching, but not braking! It was the scariest moments of all of my track weekends.

Work on compressing your braking zones, slowly increase the speeds on your turn ins and you will get that sucker M3 !

nice track! wish my local track had runoffs like that. probably would let me be bolder driving closer to the limits. wish I lived in west coast. damn, year round track season. isn't it spring yet already?

most epic part of your video is that your 135i is equipped with a V-6

the M3's lines are messy at best

I like your driving line more than the guy in the M3. He was going wide in a lot of corners, completely missing the apex. I am no expert but I think you did pretty well.

DOH! Good catch. Yeah, my 135i was the only one they made with a V-6. It's like a special edition.

Several things:

1) Awesome video! Thank you for sharing - I truly enjoyed the quality of the video and the music selection.

2) You drive a car with an inline 6 cylinder engine. No V here!

3) As others said, an LSD + stickier tires would have kept you right on that M3's booty.

4) The M3's driver does not know how to take a corner for the most part.

Great vid!

Thanks!

And everyone, YES I know I messed up on the copy-pasting of car stats. Our cars don't have a V 6. I'm just too lazy to go back and edit, re-render, and re-upload.
