The noises you hear coming from that car are not present in the stock car. This is an AC Schnitzer modified 1M coupe. The list of modifications in the original post is not comprehensive.

It's interesting that this car wasn't outfitted with a rear wing or trunk lid spoiler.

So, this optimum setup does not call for added downforce. And yet they broke a record at Sachsenring!

This just shows us that with additional mods a 1M could go even faster. Because that probably is not the ultimate modded 1M at all. Just a well calibrated one with a very good driver who probably knows the track like his own backyard. Plus, that is not exactly a track with (very) high speed straights so added down force would make less of a difference. A very impressive time anyway.

Amused by the amount of people criticizing his lack of gear. F**k example...we are all adults. If you choose to drive without gear because the driver on this video did not wear any, but you clearly need it, then you're an idiot. The driver on the video certainly knows what he's doing, he chose to wear no gear, and he still set a record in BMW history.

It'll hit you when you least expect it. Pro or not.
Stupidity is to choose not to minimize the risk.
Even then you're not safe.

RIP Allan Simonsen.

I agree, but that's beyond the point. The point I was making was in regards to the whole "he's setting a bad example." As adults we make decisions. Making a bad one because somebody else did is terrible rationalization. That said, I'm all for safety and being prepared for the worst, but I'm not going to criticize what he did simply because he did it differently than how I would have done it. Doubtful that anyone here with or without gear would have driven that car the way he did.

It'd be one thing if it only affected him, but racing is a community, and when people get hurt, all of the sudden everyone on the outside starts paying attention. Next thing you know, insurance rates for track owners go through the roof, and "regulators" start imposing their ideas of safety on enthusiasts.

It's in all of our best interests for anyone on a track to take basic safety precautions, professional or not. The story is always the same after the fact: "they had an opportunity to regulate themselves, but they didn't." Don't be the guy shouting down the voices of reason. He should have been wearing some basic safety gear.
