There are only minor differences. Mechaically they are the same car.

The euro cars have different lighting systems (clear headlight corners and dynamic pulsating third brake light under extreme braking conditions) and rear brake fog lights and a metric speedo(kph).

Everything is optional on a euro car vs packages with US spec cars. Like shaddow line trim or chrome or a smokers package with asjtray. The warranty is shorter with a euro car (only one to two years depending on the country the car is sold in) vs four years or 50k miles (all included service & wear items) in the states. Even the first service is not free over here(roughly 500 euros).

Basic differences that I know of:
#1) Orange turn signals at the front, mandated by US law
#2) Euro versions have fog lights in the back and a dashboard switch to operate them.
#3) Speed dial has both Km and Mph in the US, single unit dial in pretty much every where else in the world (there's a thread for that)
#4) US versions have option 853 "Hot Climate Version" standard although I'm not sure if that is a hardware or software difference.
#5) US versions have option 876 "Radio Frequency 315MHz" which I believe is mandated by US law.

I believe the engine (output) is equal between US and EU versions as the COC document we got for our US car's ED specifies the CO[g/km] output equal to the EU Specs.

You can also change the radio's tuning freq via the "M" button on the radio. You just turn the radio on and hold it down. Then you can select: USA, , ECE, Japan and OCE. Bellow is my DIY link for my 135i radio "hidden menus". I would bet that the 1M radio opperates the same way.

EU 1M's get the same washer bulges in the bumper as US spec cars have. It was like this for the M3 too I believe.

All (US ad ECE) 135i's got the flush mount popup washers. Only for 128i's (or 125is over here) were the flush mount washers package with the cold weather option.

Would also add that the UK-spec RHD vehicles are quite a bit faster, and handle better.

Eisenmann found out that the (rear) bumper supports are not the same between the North American spec 1M vs. Euro.

There must be some hidden differences alright, maybe due to different crash regulation requirements.

For instance there is a 92lb weight difference according to BMW between the UK and US specs.

As "crappy" as the law provides I would imagine. Keep in mind that things alllowance for window tint (or level of such) vary from state to state. Therefore, tinted glass in the US is typically a dealer installed option, and it's usually done by an aftermarket company that the dealer sublets the work to.

Interesting find on the rear carrier, part numbers related to the rear bumper do confirm this, although all surrounding (body) parts are equal. Anyone know more on (reason for) the rear bumper difference?

I know that my Euro specs 1M's rear bumpers are not painted at the bottom corners but the underbody photos I saw show that US specs are.
