WTF is this option?

So saw this 135i in the gym parking lot today with these slits in the back bumper. Anyone seen this before? What are they used for?

That's what I was thinking too. I wouldn't cut holes in my bumper though. That's why I got a roof rack

Judging from the scratches on the bumper, it's got to be for a bike rack.

Cutting rear bumper for bike rack is just silly. OEM roof rack FTW.

You should see the X5 M-sport OEM hitch.

It's to hand a rubber mat for when you park your car in the city. Look into it...actually a very good idea.

Roof rack has obvious problems for serious bikers, difficult to load/unload, wind resistance, beating the bikes up, chance for disaster. Maybe a winner for some folks, but doesn't qualify for FTW.

This does.

http://www.1upusa.com/product-quikracksilver.html

The deal is that it's all metal, there are NO flexible tiedowns. Slides into tow receiver, fixed with allen bolt expander. Two big arms on ratchets hold the tires. Bizarrely easy to load/unload.

Over the top ratings on bike websites like MTBR.

The main drawback is cost. With the hitch $400+ for one bike, $600+ for two. But function is definitely FTW.

Well, the roof rack can obviously be used for other transport purposes, ski/snowboard, cargo, etc so in that regard, it is FTW!

LOL

Seems like a lot of work for the retrofit, would just rather use a roof rack myself.

Sure. But, as I said, a roof rack not a good option for carrying bikes for most serious bikers. For them, it's not a winner, despite other uses.

If you have the hitch for the 1up, you can get a cargo carrier for it. As cheap or cheaper, more load capacity, far easier load/unload, much smaller gas mileage penalty.

I've had roof racks. Used to carry the race tires on one. I'm now too old for a roof rack, for anything. <smile> Give me hitch mounted carrying accessories, any day.
