Carly V. 2

As some may know, a new hardware version of Carly for BMW has just been released; mine will be delivered from Amazon tomorrow.

I am hoping to start a thread on this new version of the device, being as I am sure I am not the only one who will receive one.

To start, let me pose one general question: Can the dealer or a tech tell that you have coded the car when you bring it in for warranty service? Does this create any potential problems for cars still in warranty? Is there anything you recommend for people using Carly whose cars are still covered by warranty?

Thanks in advance!

Mine comes soon as well. Looking forward to exploring the options. I have no idea about warranty and coding though!!

I just looked on Amzon, they don't list the wifi iPhone version yet.

Only listed on the Carly website.

Just look for "Generation 2"

Why do you need the new one? I'm using an almost 2 yr. old ELM 327 wifi version that says I can code. Got it from Amazon.

Apparently the new one will update it's software as soon as you connect it to the app.

Ordered my OLD one three days ago.

They sent an email and said WAIT do you want the new one?

You might call them and see if they would swap if there is a real reason to do so.

I got the same email from Germany, but Amazon shipped the V1 device anyway. I just returned it, at their expense, since they had told me to tell them whether I still wanted V1, but before I could respond, Amazon shipped V1.

But Amazon just has a 30 day return window, as far as I know.

Update what software? My understanding was that the NEW V2 one was needed just to code older models like my old E60 which you could read but not code. It had something to do with the connection.

I checked their site and it does look like it will update in the future. Hmmmm....

I may try and code some with my ELM 327 wifi adapter this weekend. Just not sure what I want to code. LOL!

I think they mean that with the new adapter the firmware in the adapter itself can be updated. There is also an on-off switch on the thing so that you could leave it semi-permanently installed.

I am not sure what the real benefit is, but for ~$20, considering that one also has to buy their software, that it was a fairly trivial additional cost. Either way, I doubt it is an earth-shattering decision.

I took mine to dealer over the summer for their 20k service. They for sure scanned my car but no one said anything to me about the coding I did. When I got the car back, all my coding functions were still set.

I have the elm as well but it appears if you want to use the new features like dvd in motion and to code f series you need the new version.

The Gen 2 BT adapter for Android and IOS enable coding of F-series cars (F1x 5-series, F3x 3- and 4-series, 2-series, etc.) among other things, although the updated app to do F-series coding is not yet out. Both are now available from Amazon, but I've not ever seen one that uses wi-fi. They also have cables for model years 2004 and older. I've been waiting for this new adapter because coding my 2013 F30 335i using E-Sys and a cable is not near as easy as using Carly and the BT adapter on the wife's 2011 E88 128i.

The current adapter allows diagnostics/code reading/clearing on F-series cars, but no coding. As far as detecting custom coding and warranty issues, I've been doing it since 2010 and never had any issues. It all depends on what might go wrong, like if you code mirrors to fold when locking the car, and you have a mirror motor go bad. They could deny warranty because the mirrors were folded/unfolded more than if they had been left at the factory setting. Which raises the question of why that option, along with hundreds of others, is available? I've coded the Weatherband option in my 335i's head unit and now I can get NOAA weather reports. Why would they not code that from the factory if it's there, and there could be no harm done to cause warranty issues. It all comes down to what warranty issue you claim and how the dealership handles it.

I'm pretty sure you can code with iPhone using Wi-Fi with Gen1 or ELM327 dongle. I'll test it out this weekend.

Is bt not sketchy? What if connection is dropped partway through coding? Does the adapter buffer everything before actually sending the codes? Is wired safer or is there no issue with a wireless adapter?

I've been using the bluetooth adaptor (V.1) for couple of years with no problem.
I've also coded my friend's m3's, 335is, 1m, other member's 3 series, all no problem.
If the car's battery is too low, it will let you know that the battery level is too low and says you must start the car for coding to work.
Once you select the coding you want to be done on the car, you just press "code car" button and it take literally like 3 to 5 seconds for it to be sent to car. So it's highly unlikely that the connection will be dropped with in that few seconds.

Every time I code the car, I go into bluetooth setting on my phone, and unpair the adaptor and pair it again to start fresh.
I've also had cases where I had to restart the app during the process and it didn't have any issues on the car.

Before I bought the adaptor, I had the ebay ELM327 adaptor lying around, but I never got it to work with the app. It seemed the connection was too unstable and it was never able to get a solid connection with the app/phone.
So I ended up buying the adaptor made by the developers and never had any issues.

I think it depends on the dealer, but I'm pretty sure they are not going to give you hard time for these small programmable coding.
I think they are more concerned about tuning than coding.

Every time I bring my car in for a service, I tell them not to do any overwriting coding on the car, because I want to keep the coding I've done on my car. Although they had to update the car few services ago, and all my coding was overwritten. That's why I bought the app and the adaptor because the previous person who performed coding services charged 50$ for 3 codes.

The coding done by carly app can be easily be over written and the vehicle can be returned to factory setting by the techs. Besides, these "coding" is just adjusting the features which the vehicle already has, and we're just turning these options on or off, thus not harmful to the car. (just my opinion)

The adapter/dongle I use is WiFi. It's stable once connected. It backs up the file before reading reading codes

Aha...after checking Amazon again, you are correct. It is a wifi adapter for IOS, not BT. I use an Android tablet, so I've not had any experience with IOS devices.

BT is not "sketchy", and I've used the Gen 1 adapter for quite some time on both of my cars (E88 128i and F30 335i), although I can't do any coding on the F30 until I get the Gen 2 adapter and they upgrade the app. BT is fine as long as you stay within 30 feet of the adapter, so sitting in the car would be as safe as using wifi. I have also used a USB cable with an OBDII adapter for a friend's 2004 645i Convertible, as the BT adapter wouldn't connect with that car's modules.

I've been using E-Sys and a cable with a laptop to code my F30, which is way more complex to navigate with many more steps to perform the same thing that the next gen Carly and adapter will do with its much easier user interface. No German to translate, either, which requires a spreadsheet with the location and code number of the feature in English so you can search for it and change its setting. Takes me 3 times as long using that method as it does on the 128 using Carly.
