Oil temp

For those who monitor it, where have you placed your sensor and why?

There's an adapter that's attached with a banjo bolt to the stock oil pressure switch on the oil filter cover and which provides two ports. With one plugged the other can be used for an oil temp sensor. I think they're 1/8" NPT ports. Bimmerworld makes one and I'm sure there are others, just haven't seen any.

Oil temp sensor? Haven't found it yet, probably not looking in the right place. Gave up and went with separate sensors.

If you get the performance wheel with the electronic readout, I almost positive you can get that to display the oil temp.

Wonder if you put in and code for 135 gauges if the oil temp gauge will work?

It will.. With coding. The performance wheel with LCD shows oil temp, that's how Stig knows his temps.

Oh! Very cool, thanks. Would have to find the information on the PT-CAN bus and use my logger's display to show it. No luck with that so far. Decided to use separate sensors for oil pressure, oil temp, and coolant temp instead to avoid having to sift through bulk CAN data collection.

Correct, and it is sensitive to a single degree. I assume it is part of the oil level sensor, though not 100% sure. Best part of the Performance Wheel by far.

It is the oil pan level/condition sensor that monitors temp

I imagine that is why it takes a little time for the oil level sensor to show a reading, as it may need the oil to reach a certain temp before determining oil level?

I have an E92 328i with Msport and I have the cluster from a 335 that shows oil temp.

Correct, as the oil expands as it warms up. My air cooled 911 is the most obvious example of this. When I start the car the oil level gauge is at empty. Once it has been run for 20 minutes it rises right to the middle where it belongs. The 128i is just idiot proofing that process.

Can you recall what you had to code to get it working?
Rather than a BMWP wheel I have a P3 which should be able to display it.
The other variance between our cars is the age (K-Line vs Canbus or something)

No coding, the module that comes with the wheel picks up on it.

Bumping this thread with a question - for those who are able to monitor oil temps in the 128, what kind of temps are you seeing (summer, winter, etc)? Similar to the 135? A little cooler I would think...

Really? Just plugged it in and it works? Would LOVE to have an oil temp gauge in my E90.

I have one stock, around 230-250 max.

You can add one by using a E92 or 335i cluster.

What's involved besides the addition of the cluster?

Coding I believe, but some say plug and play. My car is a 328i and it has it factory because it's an e92, so you know it will work.
