i wonder if this has bad side effects or long term effects? i had heard that armor all is super bad for your car and stuff like tanners is way better *i use meguires and nano wash n wax*

I have tried this Armorall stuff on my wheels...on the 135i and the Elise (which also produces a great deal of brake dust!). I can safely say it is excellent and does keep the brake dust off the rims!

Some tips: you must have very clean wheels to begin with, spray on with a FULL even coverage, wait an hour or so (I waited a day) then coat with another light coating, wait for that to dry for say an hour then you can drive.

Only downside is the can is small and there are not many applications in it.

In short, this stuff is AMAZING!

I've not cleaned my car for 3 weeks now (been busy & its always rained when I have time) and have driven every day, done a track day and my wheels look like this:

Most of the black shite is tyre from the track day..

Yes this is how my wheels look too after a couple of weeks. I usually miss a couple spots/do not clean properly before coating so that results in the dusty bits you see.

Went hunting for this at my local AutoBarn and they did not have any stock :iono:

So in desperation (I HATE brake dust) I decided to give SONAX Wheel Rim Coating NanoPro ago. Have not used any of their products before but so far so good. We will see what it is like after a week in Sydney's traffic

I am trying the grits cleaner and protect stuff on my dark color winters that shipped for free from tirerack.com. Not sure am getting the type of results you guys are getting.

Anyone know what chemical compound(s) are in the Armorall stuff that stop the brake dust from sticking?

Just to update, the armorall is still going strong on my wheels...about 500km so far! I just needed a light dust with a dry cloth to clean up some streaks of brake dust that appeared, which was very easy. The majority (90%) of wheel surface remained very presentable. This stuff is marvellous!

Sonax works really well on wheels...unfortunately it is expensive in Europe (probably in AU as well) and it isn't offered to everyday consumers in the U.S.A.

Alex ... good to hear that is works well. On the Sonax front (which is more expensive than the Armorall) it seems to work as very well. Took the for a long (350KM) drive through yesterday (love holiday season) and was fairly hard on the brakes. Normally the wheels look like they have been powder coated grey but now they have just a light coating which just like your experience wipes of easily.

So we have a choice. Next time the armorall is in stock I'll buy that as it is cheaper but its nice to know there is an alternative.

According to the MSDS for Armorall Wheel Protectant, it contains:

40-50% decamethylcyclopentasiloxane
50% alkanes C3-4 (ie propane/butane propellant/solvent)
10% "other nonhazardous substances"

"This is a commercial product whose exact ratio of components may vary slightly. Minor quantities of other non

hazardous ingredients are also possible."

I'd say that the siloxane chemical is the active ingredient.

I picked up a can of this today from Big W in QV (Melb). They had at least 10 cans on the shelf!

I'm doing a big detail on the car over Christmas so I'll give it a go then. Up until I've used Swissvax Authbahn, which works well, but only lasts 3-4 washes (even when using non-acid wheel cleaner).

Having used this now for a month or two on my cars, I must tell you it is by far the best solution I've seen for managing brake dust.

Only comment is that being clear, it's easy to miss an area or two which then shows up all dusted black a few days later. :biggrin: I was never good with spreading suntan lotion either

Perhaps they should add some colour to it so you can see where you've sprayed?

Seriously, a final tip for Aussies - I find it easiest to locate this on the shelves in Kmart.
