IDK if its actually doing anything to prevent this from happening to my 1M but I always do my best to try and find non-ethanol gas when I fill up. Pretty good site and iOS app here:

I mix ethanol with my gas and have no problems. 8,000 miles now.

I do about 40% e85 and 60% 93 octane.

the symptom most people report is a long crank to start up. What happens if the pump fails at high rpm, full boost? Couldn't that blow up the engine? That should be the biggest concern for people once warranty is up.

Well yes it is attached to the engine like the Alternator and Air Conditioning Pumps. And yes it's driven by the crankshaft buy chain, but it isn't exactly an Internal part of the engine like say the Cam Shafts, Pistons etc.

the engine goes from full power into limp mode when the fuel pressure drops below acceptable levels.

We've been through all that, just fyi.
IT makes NO difference if your fuel has ethanol or not.

Mine failed today. It had quite a few long starting episodes over the past few months, or starting and immediately dying. Yesterday it went into limp mode and threw the Engine Malfunction light. If I restart it a few times I can get it to behave until I do anything beyond mid throttle, and then it craps out again. I'm going to limp it to the dealer after work today, but I already know it's the fuel pump, since it's doing exactly what my other car did, time after time after time....

My '07 335i coupe went through four of these in 30k miles, and there's no way I'm going through all this shit again. I was planning on keeping this car more or less forever, but if BMW doesn't step up and acknowledge they have a chronic failure affecting these car and at minimum extend the warranty to 100k then I'm done with it.

There is no reason a modern car should require the fuel pump to be replaced more often than the engine oil, but that is exactly my experience with not one, but my last two new BMW's. Totally unacceptable.

I had a "Faulty Fuel Pump"warning come up on my IDrive screen, then the check Engine Light came on today..
No long start up cranks, infact it starts up on first crank.
Has been a bit jerky low in the rev range lately though, and I felt it was under powered at WOT.

Anyone else had this "Faulty Fuel Pump", notification pop up on their screen?

Off to the dealer tomorrow..

That's interesting. Just had same warning pop up this morning. No difficulty starting but rough idle and surging under constant throttle...taking in tomorrow for a diagnosis

Jet Mech > Not sure on the actual cost out of warranty but here is an idea:

13517616170
$273.92

Parts wise, it's not too bad. It's located in the engine bay underneath the throttle body area.

Here's a DIY:
http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=655062

You just need to find a good shop with good hourly rates.
