Metallic "clunking" noise

Hello,

So this monday some of us euro 1addicts drove some alpine passes

At the end of the day (after coming down the last mountain) a loud metallic-sreeching noise came from (what i think) the rear brake drivers side sounded like a stone or something came in contact with the brakedisc

We pulled over - then the sreeching vanished but strange clunking noises started ( like you dropped a metal piece on something like a muffler / sheetmetal)

The noises keep occurring - when coming to a stop and while accelerating slowly - but Not all the time - had to Take the BMW Service tech for three drives until he could hear it!

No clue so far

Your LR brake pad did look like it lost the heatsheild on the backing plate. On Rudi's car he still had his round cap or disc. Here is Rudi's LR brake caliper...

I have had a couple issues that may or may not be related to your experience. First, after any reasonably hard drive (and even after somewhat normal driving) you will hear a metallic "tinking" noise coming from the brakes. This is due our two-piece rotors, with aluminum hats. The pins that connect the rotor disc to the hats make this noise as the metals expand and contract at different rates.

I also had a problem that creating a metallic "clinking" noise that sounded like it was coming from the rear diff. This happened at low speeds and was most noticeable with first gear engaged under a load change. For example, when going on and off the throttle in first gear at very low speed (I always noticed it in my underground parking garage at work). This turned out to be a mysterious differential problem....I wish I could say exactly what it was but my diff was replaced (along with driveshaft) and it no longer occurs.

Again, not sure if my issues are anywhere close to what you are finding but just thought worth a mention. Good luck!

It may be the infamous M3 cowbell. I have had it a coulple of times. Google M3 cowbell or search the thread in the M3 section.

I had a clunking noise in mine too.
Thought it was the wheel bearing, but on my way to the dealership to have it checked out, the noise disappeared.
Tech said it might be a pebble that got stuck but fell out during the drive.

Many folks have had a similar grinding sound coming form their rear wheels. It usually happens at low speed, usually in 1st gear. It is usually caused by a pebble/rock stuck somewhere in your wheel hub area. It typically sounded like a can being crunched or a rock rolling around in a can. One person claimed it was a problem with his differential and his diff was replaced, but most people say the sound eventually goes away by itself or after they remove the wheel. Try removing the wheels, inspecting the hub, brakes and brake shield for lodged pebbles, and putting the wheels back on. That did the trick for me and for a few other folks.

I had this and it was a stone that got stuck , went away after a day or so

I also had the rock issue....was a horrific noise that sounded like I was dragging a bunch of tin cans under the car.

The other noises I mentioned above are infinitely more subtle.

I have this metal clicking noise as well, happens everytime when I turn my steering driving very slowly from stationary.

Brought it to the dealership, inspect my front suspension but cannot find any fault.

Can you guys please advise what I should do next as I want to get this sorted under warranty.

I had a similar clunking noise as well (rear passenger side), it sounded as if a stone or a small twig was caught between the disk and the protection plate.

I removed the wheel, tried to locate the stone (no cigar), then I poked through the disk holes with a small tube to losen anything that didn't belong there. Still no stone though.

I then remounted the wheel, fixed an appointment with my dealer, did a couple of hard brakes and of course the clunking was gone. Just to be safe I asked my dealer to have a look but they didn't see anything unusual.

If you want my opinion, call your dealer. The instant you hang up the phone the clunking will ge gone
